The Hawaii State Department of Education is committed to hiring highly qualified teachers in every classroom. For this teaching position, the minimum qualification is a Bachelor’s Degree. If you are hired without completing a Teacher’s Education Program, you have a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license and must enroll in a program aligned with the teaching line you are hired in.

Upon hire you will need to have a valid Hawaii teaching license or an Emergency Hire Permit. You may apply for your Hawaii teaching license on the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board website.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a relevant field.
  • Valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit upon hire.
  • Enrollment in a Hawaii Teacher’s Education Program within 3 years of employment if not already licensed.
  • Active pursuit toward meeting Hawaii licensing requirements as set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board.

Compensation

and Benefits

New employees can expect their first paycheck within the first 3 pay periods of their start date. Payday is on the 5th and 20th (or previous business day) of every month.

  • Compensation: 10‑month teachers shall be compensated based on the applicable Bargaining Unit 05 10‑month salary schedule.
  • Paid Sick Leave and State/Federal Holidays: 18 days of paid sick leave, 6 of which may be used for personal or professional development during the school year.
  • Health Insurance:
    The State may pay part of premiums for enrollment in a State-sponsored medical, drug, vision, and adult dental plan.
  • Group Life Insurance:
    Free life insurance policy for employees and retirees.
  • Premium Conversion Plan:
    Employees may increase take‑home pay by having the State deduct health care premiums before payroll taxes.
  • Flexible Spending Accounts:
    Eligible employees can reduce federal and state income taxes and Social Security taxes through a tax‑savings benefit program.
  • Retirement Plan:
    The State contributes to a retirement plan. Employees with at least 10 years of credited service and who meet age requirements may retire.
  • Tax Shelter Annuity (TSA):
    Eligible employees may participate in a pre‑tax contribution annuity program.
  • Deferred Compensation: A tax‑deferred retirement investment program with various options.
  • Temporary Disability Insurance:
    Benefits for disability caused by a non‑work‑related injury or illness.
  • Social Security:
    The State contributes to employees’ Social Security accounts.
  • Workers’ Compensation:
    Benefits for medical expenses and partial wage support for job‑related injuries.
  • Union & Collective Bargaining:
    Employees may join the union for collective bargaining. 12‑Month teachers are represented by the Hawaii State Teachers Association.
