This position reports to the Administrator of Chaminade University Montessori Laboratory School (CUMLS) - Position Summary:
The Montessori Teacher is responsible for co-teaching, collaborating with other CUMLS Montessori Teacher(s), setting the tone of the classroom, and guiding the support teaching staff (aide, assistant, intern). He/She is responsible for using the Montessori philosophy, method and apparatus to observe, assess and attend to the safety and developmental needs of each student at CUMLS.
- Collaborates with the Administrator in supporting the Education Division’s Montessori and Early Childhood faculty member(s) in implementing the philosophy of the Chaminade Montessori Teacher Education and Early Childhood Education Programs in policy and practice at CUMLS.
- Collaborates with other CUMLS Montessori teacher(s), support staff and interns and the Administrator in the training of student interns to include the development of the necessary skills, knowledge and professional disposition to become highly-qualified and highly-effective teachers.
- Remains knowledgeable of recent research and developments in the field of Montessori and early childhood education.
- Enthusiastically represents CUMLS within the community in professional settings, and at related events.
- Collaborates with the teaching staff in curriculum development and is responsible for unfolding and integrating it into the Montessori environment.
- Prepares and maintains a Montessori environment and develops curriculum that recognizes all aspects of the child in collaboration with and under the supervision of the CUMLS Administrator.
- Recognizes diversity and meets the needs of each team member to produce a cohesive and collaborative team with the support of the CUMLS Administrator.
- Employs methods and teaching techniques that support the developmental needs of each child.
- Collaborates with other CUMLS Montessori teacher(s), support staff and student interns to ensure that the classroom climate is calm, peaceful and an optimal learning environment for all students.
- Participates in regular staff meetings as needed to achieve the mission of CUMLS.
- Engages in an ongoing assessment of curriculum and the classroom environment as the developmental needs of the students unfolds in collaboration and under the supervision of the CUMLS Administrator.
- Observes and records children's behavior and development and shares these observations with the CUMLS Administrator, teaching staff, and parents/caregivers.
- Collaborates with the Marianist faculty to create and implement a religious program that is developmentally appropriate for young children that aligns with Montessori philosophy and Marianist values.
- Conducts parent-teacher conferences according to the guidelines developed by the program.
- Organizes and participates in the planning of school events, parent nights, parent education programs and other school functions.
- Collaborates with the LRAMLS Administrator and teaching staff to purchase and prepare snacks, refill supplies and perform other routine tasks that are necessary for the daily operation of the prepared classroom environment.
- Teaches in the morning and/or the afternoon programs to meet DHS, AMS, and NAEYC teacher-child ratio requirements.
