Duties Summary
This position is located in the Technical Services Section, Office of the State Librarian, Hawaii State Public Library System. This position is responsible for planning, organizing, and supervising statewide cataloging and classification services, database maintenance, acquisition of selected library materials, and processing of library materials received by the Technical Services Section. In order to perform the duties and responsibilities of this position, applicants must possess demonstrated knowledge of a variety of cataloging and metadata standards including Anglo American Cataloging Rules, Dewey Decimal Classification, Resource Description and Access, and machine-readable cataloging;
automated library systems; and e-resources management. Applicants must also be able to plan, organize, and direct the implementation of new and modified cataloging and/or classification systems and procedures; make priority decisions; demonstrate competency in computer use including internet and Microsoft Office products, or equivalent; and learn and become proficient with equipment and software programs and required to effectively and efficiently perform the assigned duties.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:
Education:
A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited four-year college or university. Professional Librarian
Experience:
Four and one-half (4
-1/2) years of progressively responsible professional experience in one or more major functional areas of librarianship (e.g., selection, acquisition, cataloging and classification of materials, collection development and maintenance, reference and readers' advisory services, or development and promotion of library services), which required the application of principles, practices, knowledge, theories and tools of library science. At least one year of experience must have been comparable to the Librarian V or two years must have been comparable to the Librarian IV.
The Librarian V reflects responsibility for planning and supervising the operation of a large public library; supervise and participate in the selection, development and maintenance of a collection of materials in one or more broad and complex subject area(s); develop, plan, coordinate and evaluate a major area of library services (i.e., children/young adult services) on a statewide basis. The Librarian IV reflects responsibility for professional leadership as the position in charge of a library operation;
or as a specialist in an assigned field(s). The work requires the use of experienced judgment in providing appropriate material and library services to the patrons/clientele of a particular library; performing specialized activities (e.g., cataloging and classification, reference and materials selection) within a complex and dynamic subject field(s); and/or planning, coordinating and evaluating library services in a major service/functional area.
Selective Certification:
Of the required years of professional librarian work experience required for the Librarian VI, one (1) year must have involved one or a combination of the following:
1. Developing, implementing, and maintaining policies and procedures pertaining to cataloging and classification services for a library, and/or 2. Working with e-resources that included maintaining and tracking program budgets and accounts; evaluating vendors; assisting with gathering statistics for collection development; and/or troubleshooting access issues for library users. Experience:
One (1) year of experience which included:
1) planning, organizing, scheduling, and directing the work of others;
2) assigning and reviewing their work;
3) advising them on difficult work problems;
4) training and developing subordinates; and
