Position: Assistant Director of Research, Instruction, & Public Services

Job Summary

The Assistant Director for Research, Instruction & Public Services provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for HPU’s research, instructional, access, and public services programs. Reporting to the Director of the Library & Learning Commons, this position plays a key role in advancing the library's mission through the development, assessment, and continuous improvement of services that support student success, faculty research, and academic excellence across the university.

The Assistant Director oversees public services operations, including circulation, course reserves, interlibrary loan, resource sharing, and student workforce management. This position is responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training, supervision, scheduling, and evaluation of undergraduate, graduate, and Federal Work Study student employees, ensuring effective staffing and service delivery across all library locations. The Assistant Director also provides leadership for access services workflows, resource sharing operations and service quality initiatives that enhance the user experience.

Responsibilities include administration of Springshare products and related service platforms, including Lib Guides, Lib Answers, Lib Cal, and consultation scheduling systems. The position coordinates and assesses research support, instructional services, and outreach activities while utilizing data‑informed decision‑making to optimize library hours, programs, services, and resource allocation.

The Assistant Director collaborates closely with librarians, faculty, staff, and campus partners to strengthen information literacy, research support, student engagement, and academic success initiatives. The position contributes to strategic planning, assessment, accreditation activities, budget development, grant writing, and other initiatives that advance the goals of the Library & Learning Commons and the broader university community. The Assistant Director also provides reference, research, and instructional support to students and faculty and serves as an active member of the library leadership team.

Location

This on‑site position is based out of our downtown Honolulu campuses, particularly at the Libraries located in Waterfront Plaza and Aloha Tower Marketplace.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications
  • At least one year of experience in a leadership role, with demonstrated success in managing teams, projects, or operations in an academic or library setting.
  • Master’s degree from an ALA‑accredited program.
  • Demonstrate excellence in communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to foster positive working relationships and build partnerships.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving and organizational skills with demonstrated ability to provide well‑reasoned analysis using appropriate research and data resources; developing reports to support conclusions; and aptitude for detailed work.
  • Proficiency in utilizing tools such as Microsoft Teams and Outlook to maintain effective communication and organize departmental projects, including managing spreadsheets and collaborative documents.
  • Demonstrates a strong commitment to student‑focused practices and innovative services, with the flexibility to adapt to a changing environment.
