Assistant Professor – Molecular and Cellular Biologist
The School of Life Sciences (SoLS), College of Natural Sciences at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor (F-3). We seek an individual who can contribute disciplinary expertise in Molecular and Cellular Biology and/or Immunology, demonstrating an outstanding record of research productivity related to these areas. We welcome early-career applicants who are willing to leverage the unique research and educational environments in Hawai'i.
This is a permanent, tenure-track, full-time, 9-month faculty appointment to begin August 1, 2026, subject to position clearance, availability of funds and satisfactory performance.
The successful candidate is expected to develop an independent, extramurally-funded research program to be based at SoLS laboratory facilities on the UH Manoa campus. There will be access to advanced research cores (microscopy, microbiome, sequencing, and histology) within the same building and/or walkable distances. The faculty is expected to develop or update undergraduate course(s) in areas of Molecular and Cellular Biology, and/or Immunology, which are central components of the Molecular and Cellular Biology (MCB) undergraduate program.
The faculty is also expected to be actively involved in supporting combined bachelor's and master's degree programs (BAMs), collaboratively working between SoLS, John
A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), and UH Cancer Center. The faculty will also be expected to contribute to teaching and mentoring graduate students, as well as serving on thesis committees in one of the SoLS graduate programs:
Zoology, Microbiology, Botany, or Marine Biology.
- Earned Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree from a college or university of recognized standing in a field relevant to the position by time of hire.
- Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
- University-level or equivalent teaching experience or mentoring experience
- Postdoctoral research experience
- Research excellence and creativity in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Immunology, or a related field as demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Demonstrated experience in seeking or obtaining extramural funding.
- Demonstrated experience and excellence in instruction of undergraduate and graduate courses in the life sciences, with an emphasis on cellular and molecular biology or immunology
- Experience working with students from varied backgrounds
- Vision of research that takes advantage of Hawai'i's unique location, resources, and faculty expertise in the School of Life Sciences, other university units, and state and federal agencies engaged in molecular and cellular biology research
- Experience in developing an undergraduate or graduate course
