Teaching – 20%
- Teach credit courses in Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology, and related disciplines offered by the Department to undergraduate, graduate, and medical students.
- Serve as a mentor and advisor for undergraduate and graduate students, medical students, and residents.
Research – 60%
- Participate in and support existing infectious diseases research interests while establishing or re‑establishing an independent basic science, clinical, or translational research program at JABSOM.
- Conduct research in areas including infectious disease pathogenesis, host‑microbe interactions, infectious disease epidemiology and diagnostics, clinical trials, and vaccine development for viral diseases (e.g., HIV, SARS‑CoV‑2, dengue, West Nile virus, Zika, Filovirus) and parasitic diseases (e.g., malaria, rat lungworm).
- Collaborate with other principal investigators inside and outside the department on immunological and microbe‑host interaction research.
- Submit applications for extramural funding.
- Present research findings and organize workshops at national and international conferences.
- Publish research work in leading peer‑reviewed scholarly journals in tropical medicine.
Service – 20%
- Participate in the Department’s committees for graduate admissions, assessment, curriculum development, and evaluation.
- Participate in Department, School and University‑wide committees, including graduate committees, university committees, and the faculty senate.
- Engage in other scholarly activities as assigned.
- Ph.D., M.D., M.D./Ph.D., D.V.M. or another doctoral degree in the biosciences from an institution of recognized standing.
- At least three (3) years of post‑doctoral research experience.
- Demonstrated ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Expertise in infectious diseases research with a strong publication record in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Demonstrated ability to obtain extramural research funding.
- Demonstrated scholarly achievement.
- Professionalism in meeting and collaborating with others.
- Board certified or an active candidate for board certification and eligible for a Hawaii medical license.
- Experience with independent extramural research funding.
- Research interest in emerging and re‑emerging infectious diseases.
- Experience with BSL‑3 pathogens, animal models of BSL‑3 pathogens, and host‑pathogen interactions.
- Experience in international research.
