Duties and Responsibilities
  • Works directly with students with learning, physical, psychiatric, and emotional disabilities under the direction of the campus Disability Specialist.
  • Provides eligible students with approved disability access services for each phase of the semester including intake, registration, orientation, academic support, and evaluation.
  • Arranges disability services including but not limited to captioning and transcription; note taking, testing accommodations; providing various alternative formats; and providing students training to assistive technologies.
  • Administers and proctors tests; provides testing accommodations.
  • Recruits, trains and evaluates student assistants - responsible for coordinating all student assistants.
  • Organizes and facilitates group coaching for students with disabilities to assist in transitioning into and out of college.
  • Maintains and updates confidential student files.
  • Maintains current longitudinal records of student contacts and progress including quarter, semester, and annual reports.
  • Maintains and updates disability program database.
  • Keeps abreast of emerging trends in disability access services, including assistive technologies in higher education.
  • Regularly consults with disability service providers and participates in meetings and discussions for the purpose of providing effective and appropriate services to students with disabilities.
  • Maintains and updates inventory and loaning of disability related equipment to students.
  • Assists disability service providers with maintaining and updating essential information such as the campus accessibility map, disability policies/procedures guidebook, interpreter handbook, and program technical standards.
  • Related work activities include, but are not limited to, participating in professional development activities and serving on campus committees.
  • May work evenings and/or weekends, on-and-off-campus assignments as required.

  • Minimum Qualifications
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree in education, special education, social sciences, counseling or related field and 3 year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for working directly with individuals with disabilities and/or special populations; or equivalent education/training or experience.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of working with students with disabilities as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles, and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with working with students with disabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer and apply word processing software.
  • For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with disabled students, student assistants, faculty, and colleagues.
  • Ability to work in a detail-oriented environment to resolve problems and pursue assignments through to completion.
  • Desirable Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of guidelines, procedures, and techniques used in providing access services to college students with disabilities.
  • One year experience working with students with disabilities in a post-secondary environment.
  • Knowledge and experience with auxiliary aids for persons with disabilities.
  • Previous experience working with students with learning disabilities.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations.
  • Familiar and comfortable with basic/rudimentary American Sign Language (ASL); proficiency in ASL (credentialed/uncredentialed) highly desirable.
