Position Overview
Teacher of the Deaf (TOD) will be located on the Kona side of Hawaii Island supporting the HKKK Complex Area. This TOD will be assigned to a classroom for deaf learners within the complex area's new Regional Day School Program for the Deaf. As the population of students evolves, the duties of this position may evolve into itinerant duties.
Preferred ExperiencePreferred experience in Deaf/Hard of Hearing (which is a specific category of SpED).
Qualifications and LicensingPreferred by the Hawaii State Department of Education is a Bachelor's Degree. If hired without completing a Teacher's Education Program, you have a maximum of 3 years to obtain a valid Hawaii teaching license. You must enroll in a Program to continue employment with the Department. Each year of employment, you must demonstrate active pursuit toward meeting Hawaii licensing requirements set forth by the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board (HTSB).
Upon hire you must have a valid Hawaii teaching license or Emergency Hire Permit. The Hawaii Teacher Standards Board Website provides information on applying for a Hawaii teaching license. The websites teachinhawaii.org and hawaiiteacherstandardsboard.org provide information on the eligibility requirements for bonuses, differentials, and initial salary placement. To obtain a Hawaii Teaching License, which is required to receive any salary differentials, please apply with the Hawaii Teacher Standards Board.
