Under the general direction of the Lower School Principal, the Preschool & Elementary Music Teacher plays a vital role in supporting this mission by delivering high-quality, developmentally appropriate music instruction to students across a range of grade levels. This position is responsible for creating an engaging and inclusive classroom environment where students are encouraged to explore creativity, develop musical skills, and cultivate an enduring appreciation for the arts.
The teacher designs and implements lessons that not only build foundational knowledge in music but also promote critical thinking, collaboration, and self-expression.
The Preschool & Elementary Music Teacher inspires a love of learning by nurturing each student’s unique abilities, fostering a growth mindset, and encouraging perseverance and joy in the learning process. Through meaningful instruction and positive relationships, the teacher supports students in developing confidence, discipline, and respect for others. In alignment with the school’s Catholic identity, the teacher models and integrates faith-based values into the classroom, reinforcing principles such as kindness, service, empathy, and community.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in education or related field, OR comparable experience
- 1 year music teaching experience in elementary education or related field working with elementary-aged students from diverse backgrounds.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate professionalism in appearance, actions, and verbal communication.
- Intermediate proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Google applications (Classroom, Docs, Sheets, Forms)
- Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work outside normal business hours, if necessary.
- Must be able to understand, read/ write in English to follow basic instructions, and take direction from supervisors.
- Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with Virtus/Safe Environment policy.
- TB Clearance as required by Hawaii State Department of Education
- Able to work all shifts and extended hours.
- Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education or Music
- 3 years of Choir instruction
- Strong knowledge of content area curriculum and instructional methodologies.
- Experience to demonstrate strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Good interpersonal and communication skills; strong organization skills; handle multiple tasks and projects, and good judgment.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
- Strong supervisory and leadership skills with the ability to effectively train others.
- Demonstrated ability to protect and maintain confidential information.
- Successful candidate will be able to work in an environment that utilizes excellent time and stress management skills.
- Instruction and classroom management (70%)
- Supports student learning and development through written, verbal and hands- on coaching and modeling in a positive and supportive manner.
- Work in close harmony with the administration and with each other.
- Be responsible for the assigned students' instruction.
- Responsible for the immediate supervision and safety of students during class time, advisory, the assigned time of supervision duty, and on off-campus school excursions.
- Review and administer correction in cases of student misconduct.
- Require mannerly and respectful behavior from students.
