Starting at $46.57 per instructional hour. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience

Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University of Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular Board of Regents (BOR) and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave). Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

  • Positions are for short-term, part-time, non-credit instructors
  • Contingent upon student enrollment, position availability, program needs, and funding

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach non-credit Academic English skills courses assigned according to curriculum guidelines;
  • Subjects include but are not limited to the following: reading, writing, grammar, listening/speaking, integrated skills, English for specific purposes (tourism, business, service learning, presentation skills, Hawaiiana, etc);
  • Independently plan, organize, and carry out instruction, and contribute to the development of course curriculum;
  • Work under the general supervision of the Assistant Director in course competencies and program learning outcomes;
  • Complete program-related administrative responsibilities (attendance records, testing, evaluations, grades);
  • Prepare course syllabi and reports related to teaching and student progress;
  • Participate in faculty meetings and program activities;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Second Language Studies, Education, English, Linguistics, or related field with 2 years of experience teaching, training, and/or tutoring in the field.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and communicate effectively with adult English language learners in an academic classroom setting
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively, and communicate effectively with individuals of various demographic populations and cultures.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Office Professional Suite, and/or related programs.
  • Desirable Qualifications

  • Master's in Second Language Studies, Education, English, or Linguistics
  • Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign/Second Language (TEFL/TESL) or Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA)
  • High intermediate level of proficiency achieved in a language that serves our HELP population (Japanese, Korean, Chinese, etc.).
  • Demonstrated commitment and/or experience supporting the success of students.
