Educational Specialist II
Applicants may be educational officers, teachers, and other qualified individuals. This position is included in the Educational Officers' Bargaining Unit and will be filled as a clear line appointment. A written examination/assignment may be administered to help determine possession of the knowledge and abilities portions of the minimum qualification requirements.
Examples of DutiesUnder the general supervision of the Educational Specialist III of the Learning Support Section, the Educational Specialist II:
Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in education with specialization in a subject field appropriate to the area(s) of assignment. Education Substitution: (1) Graduation from an accredited college or university with a master's degree in a related field, which may include Child Development, Child Psychology, or another related field; OR (2) Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in a related field PLUS two (2) years additional experience in teaching or curriculum program planning.
Experience: Six (6) years of responsible professional work experience in education of which four (4) years shall have been in teaching and two (2) years in curriculum or program planning, as appropriate. Desired Experience: Experience in early childhood research;
Hawaiian immersion and/or Kaiapuni contexts; organizational leadership, planning, and coordination in the areas of assignment. Combined Education and Experience: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable as determined by the Department. Substitutions can be considered for the requirement of experience in an education program, agency or system. Knowledge: Foundations of curriculum and instruction; instructional media and computers;
foundations of American education; tests and measurements; principles of learning and individual differences; curriculum design and development; educational statistics; purposes, methods, subject matter and materials pertinent to the area(s) of assignment; research developments, trends and current issues or problems pertinent to the area(s) of assignment; laws, rules, regulations and administrative procedures pertinent to the area(s) of assignment. Desired Knowledge: Early childhood education and developmentally appropriate practices for all domains of child learning;
developmental milestones and early childhood disabilities; oral language and early brain development; research foundations, methods and data analysis pertinent to the areas of assignment;
Hawaiian language and Hawaiian immersion instruction; foundations of Indigenous education; assessment for learning and formative instruction cycles; nature-based and ?aina-based instruction; inclusive education for children with disabilities and multilingual children in P-3 settings. Ability to: Provide leadership, planning and coordination in the area(s) of assignment; develop, analyze and evaluate plans, programs and procedures; communicate effectively with others both orally and in writing;
