Position: SW Environmental Sciences Lab & Field Asst.

Student Worker, Environmental Sciences Laboratory & Field Assistant

The responsibilities of this position consist of assisting the Professor for Environmental courses, including with preparation in the lab for field projects and being present for field labs with students. This posting is for two lab and field assistants who will work closely together alongside the Professor.

Learning Outcomes

  • Lab and field work skills involved in water monitoring.
  • Science communication skills used to explain the value of coastal environmental restoration.
  • Organization and time management to ensure students are prepared to complete field and lab tasks.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • One of the two assistants will be responsible for driving the CUH van to carpool students for field labs. All students are eligible; for more information, visit .
  • Conducting necessary lab work to prepare for field work.
  • Preparing field supplies for field visits; some field activities require preparing gear the day before.
  • Cleaning and organizing field supplies after field visits, or later in the day if the assistant has class right after.

Minimum

  • Current sophomore
  • Minimum grade of B for a lower-division Biology, Chemistry, or Environmental lecture and lab recommended

Preferred

  • Student should maintain a current GPA of at least 2.5

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Organized with meticulous attention to detail.
  • Ability to prioritize work and resources.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and arrive to class meetings on time.
  • Attention to detail with a focus on thoroughness and quality.
  • High integrity and ethical standards.

Physical Requirements

Duties involve light work in an office and community setting and requires a minimum of physical effort with intermittent sitting, standing, climbing stairs, and walking inclines. Must be able to lift 20 pounds, walk the campus with ease, and have excellent motor skills. Must have finger dexterity. Must be able to communicate information and ideas so that others will understand.

Other Requirements

  • For one of the two assistants: must have a valid Driver's License
  • Must be van certified (visit to get started)
  • This is a part-time, non-exempt Student Worker position. Depending on the project cycles and workflow demands of the department, additional hours or workday schedule changes may be occasionally required. Must be willing and able to work occasional nights and weekends and have a varying schedule when required.
  • Performs such similar, comparable or related duties as may be assigned or required
  • Observes all safety and health regulations and works in accordance with safe work procedures and policies of the University. Reports unsafe acts/conditions and injuries in a timely and proper manner
