DESCRIPTION:

The P TD TRANSMISSION & DISTRIBUTION ENGINEERING Department of the H ENGINEERING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Professional)

This posting seeks to fill at either the Engineer I or Engineer II level; whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the applying candidate.

ENGINEER I

JOB FUNCTION:

Under direct supervision of higher level professional engineers, performs design, project engineering, project management and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of Hawaiian Electric. Independently evaluates, selects and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures and criteria using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications. Assignments have clear and specified objectives and require the investigation of a limited number of variables.

Receives instruction on specific assignment objectives, complex features and possible solutions. Assistance is furnished on unusual problems and work is reviewed for application of sound professional judgment.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
  • Conducts project design and cost alternative studies, field inspections, and prepares associated reports.
  • Prepares and manages cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material and construction specifications and construction contracts for projects assigned.
  • Performs project engineering and project management functions for assigned projects.
  • Coordinates work by consulting engineers, evaluates proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment and makes recommendations.
  • Understands the Company’s Policies, Mission, Vision, Values, and follows the culture dimensions to ensure the success of the company.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Knowledge Requirements

  • A BS degree in engineering in a discipline relevant to the Department from an accredited engineering school.
  • Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of engineering acquired through advanced college level courses or equivalent experience.
  • Working knowledge of engineering design, project engineering, project management and construction methods for electric utility facilities, normally acquired through a minimum of 3 years’ relevant engineering experience.
  • Working knowledge of personal computers and software applications such as spreadsheets and word processing; ability to learn additional tools.
  • Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and Safe Start principles to achieve operational safety and excellence.

Skills Requirements

  • Good leadership and communications skills; ability to work with all levels of the company, outside contractors, and customers.
  • Ability to adapt to a demanding work environment and changing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism in handling sensitive issues.
  • Ability to analyze and manage project requirements, costs and schedules.
  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license.

Experience Requirements

  • Experience in design of additions, modifications, upgrades and rearrangements of utility generation, transmission, substation, and related systems; experience must be in a specific area of expertise.
ENGINEER II

JOB FUNCTION:

Performs design, project engineering, project management, and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of Hawaiian Electric. Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in evaluating, selecting, and substantial adaptation of standard techniques and criteria; devises new approaches to problems.
