The Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP), Building Division is seeking two (2) safety-conscious and detail-oriented Plans Examining Engineer IV's. This full-time, permanent role, located in Honolulu, involves reviewing and analyzing building plans to ensure safety and compliance with the Building Code and other regulations, and overseeing the approval of all building projects under the Building Department.
Responsibilities- Check plans and specifications for building permit applications and ensure compliance with engineering standards, the Building Code, and other regulations.
- Review major building designs and assist in evaluating complex structures for structural adequacy.
- Advise and consult with architects, engineers, and the inspection team on structural designs and code compliance.
- Approve building permits and ensure designs meet all safety and regulatory requirements.
- Manage the Plans Examining Unit by setting goals, developing policies and procedures, overseeing budgets, and recommending staffing and resources as needed.
- Assist the public and conduct inspections by answering questions, interpreting building codes, guiding permit requirements, conducting field inspections for major engineering issues, and recommending revisions to codes or procedures.
- Perform other related duties as needed.
- Work schedule is Monday - Friday from 7:45 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.
- Actual salary will be commensurate with applicable experience, pending approval, and subject to funding availability.

Education and ExperienceEducation Requirement
Equivalent to graduation from a regionally-accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor's degree in an engineering specialty.

Experience Requirement
Three years of non-registered professional Civil or Structural engineering experience.
- Apply principles and practices of structural engineering.
- Apply civil engineering principles to buildings and structures.
- Understand strength and composition of construction materials.
- Interpret the Building and Housing Codes and related ordinances.
- Review and analyze building plans and specifications for compliance.
- Communicate and work effectively with engineers, architects, contractors, and the public.
- Valid Driver's License (type3/automobile), as required.
- Current State of Hawaii registration as a professional Civil or Structural engineer.
NOTE:
Applicants with an out-of-state license in Civil or Structural Engineering must obtain Hawaii licensure prior to appointment.
