Brief Posting Description

The P TS STRUCTURAL Department of the H ENGINEERING Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has 1 Management vacancy available. (Role: Non‑Exempt)

This posting seeks to fill at either the Land Surveyor I or Land Surveyor II level; whichever level is most suited to the qualifications of the applying candidate.

Land Surveyor I – Responsibilities
  • Plans, organizes, schedules, and directs a field crew in conducting field surveys to locate land boundaries, to document easements and to layout facilities for construction projects. Prepares labor estimates for surveying assignments. Interacts with internal and external customers on survey and land documentation.

  • Performs all calculations for mapping, construction layouts and easement documentation.

  • Prepares and compiles maps and descriptions for land acquisitions, new routes, subdivisions, easement documentation and Land Court surveys.

  • Performs title searches for ownership, land descriptions, encumbrances, etc., for researching projects, mapping and easement purposes. Obtains survey data from government agencies or other sources.

  • Provides assistance to the Supervising Land Surveyor and Lead Land Surveyor on status reports involving easements, revocable land permits, civil suits and survey project estimates. Requests easement documents from Land and Rights of Way Division and works with Land agents on issues of land title, descriptions and mapping.

  • Performs work in a safe manner in accordance with Company policies. Responsible for securing the work site and ensuring field work site safety for all members of the survey crew.

  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.

Land Surveyor I – Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of the principles and best practices of land surveying, operation of survey instruments and current surveying technology, Hawaii Land Court rules and procedures for subdivision, mapping and land description, title searching, county subdivision procedures and regulations, writing and interpreting land descriptions acquired through on‑the‑job experience and/or Community College or University level courses or equivalent.

  • Working knowledge of personal computers and current office software. Able to work with spreadsheets, word processing, etc., as well as current Surveying software applications to include data collection and data processing, cogo, contouring packages and CADD.

  • Working knowledge of state and federal laws and regulations as related to specific division or department activities.

  • Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.

  • Working knowledge of Safe Start principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.

  • Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license. Must meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy. These standards may be adjusted periodically to meet business and safety objectives.

  • Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and to adapt to rapidly changing priorities.

  • Good written and oral communication skills.

  • Ability to operate and transport survey tools and equipment.

  • Must be able to hike or fly in helicopters to remote field sites.
