Engineer IV (EN‑24): $8,465.00 – $10,804.00 per month
Engineer V (EN‑26): $9,141.00 – $11,669.00 per month
Posted salary range indicates potential compensation and is not necessarily the starting salary. New hires normally begin at the initial step; placement above the initial step may be considered based on position requirements, exceptional qualifications, budget availability, and prior approval. Current Hawaii State Department of Education employees will be placed according to applicable regulations and collective bargaining agreements.
Responsibilities- Serve as a technical expert in a specialized area or program function, performing staff advisory, consulting, and reviewing duties.
- Assume supervisory responsibilities when applicable: review projects received, plan methods of approach, assign work, provide technical guidance, and manage personnel functions such as performance evaluation, disciplinary action, and training.
- Maintain awareness of latest developments in the specialization and advise employees on current data and techniques.
- Ensure coordination of work with related projects within and outside the section; review technical reports for accuracy, adequacy, validity, and feasibility of recommendations.
- Prepare budget estimates for major and long‑range projects and produce technical reports and correspondence.
- All applicants must meet one of the education or experience requirements listed below.
- Education:
Graduation from a school of engineering at an accredited college or university. A degree in physics, mathematics, or chemistry may also qualify if the applicant has at least 15 credits in core engineering sciences. - Professional Engineering
Experience:
Progressively responsible experience requiring knowledge and application of physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences to solve practical engineering problems. - Experience Examples:
- Design and development of machinery, equipment, structures, or systems.
- Original research in engineering disciplines.
- Administration of engineering programs and projects (analysis, feasibility, cost, and direction of solutions).
- Interpretation of operational requirements and development of standard procedures.
- Evaluation or survey of engineering projects, structures, or services.
- Professional Engineering License:
Hawaii State Certificate of Registration required for Engineer IV and higher levels. - Driver’s License:
Current, valid driver’s license required.
- Engineer IV:
Minimum 3 years of professional engineering experience, with at least one year at a level comparable to Engineer III. No supervisory or staff advisory experience required. - Engineer V:
Minimum 4 years of professional engineering experience, with at least one year comparable to Engineer IV. Supervisory potential may be accepted in place of actual supervisory experience; demonstrated aptitude through performance on supervisory assignments or training is required. - Substitutions: A master’s degree may substitute for one year of engineering experience; excess supervisory or staff advisory experience may substitute for engineering experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
