This position heads the Field Consultant Unit of the Bridge Design Section, Design Branch, Highways Division, Department of Transportation. Responsibilities include conducting preliminary location, type and cost studies; preparing, supervising and approving design computations, plan specifications and estimates for bridges, separation structures, retaining walls, pedestrian facilities, tunnels, culverts, small buildings and other structures; developing, preparing, reviewing and approving construction and maintenance plans, specifications, proposals, estimate details and computations for both State designed and consultant designed projects;

and performing other related duties as assigned.

Applicants must possess knowledge of principles, practices, methods and techniques of structural engineering, engineering mechanics, and the mechanics of materials as it relates to structural engineering design and functions; be able to perform and supervise structural engineering design, construction and inspection activities; analyze stresses and determine required foundations and structural features. Applicants must possess a valid State of Hawaii Professional Engineer license at the time of application.

A bachelor's degree from a school of engineering at an accredited four‑year college or university. Relevant substitutions apply.

• Four (4) years progressively responsible professional engineering experience.
• At least one (1) year of engineering experience comparable to the next lower level.

Applicants must possess supervisory experience/aptitude and/or staff advisory experience as described in the complete Minimum Qualification Requirements.

Applicants must possess a valid driver's license at the time of appointment.
