Salary

Engineer VI, SR-28: $7,747.00 - $8,809.00 per month.

Responsibilities
  • Supervises the professional and nonprofessional personnel of a major engineering activity;
  • Develops procedures and standards for carrying out specialty in the organization and represents the organization with authority on technical engineering matters within the area of specialization;
  • May direct a large engineering section or assist in directing a large engineering division or district office as a technical specialist in planning, development, design and/or research;
  • May lead the efforts of a team engaged in carrying out difficult or critical project assignments with emphasis in the area of specialization;
  • Serves as a staff specialist responsible for overall control and coordination of a number of major and complex engineering projects or programs;
  • Performs other duties as required.

    Education & Experience Requirements

    All applicants must meet one of the following:

  • A. Graduation from a school of engineering in an accredited college or university. For some positions, a degree in physics, mathematics or chemistry may be accepted if the applicant has had at least 15 credits in engineering sciences (e.g., thermodynamics, statics, electrical science, applied mechanics, engineering drawing, strength of materials, etc.).
  • B. Administrative, professional or technical experience involving the application and knowledge of the fundamental physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, including physics, chemistry, mathematics through integral calculus and engineering sciences such as statics, dynamics, strength of material, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and engineering drawing and other specialized courses to one of the branches of engineering. Such experience must be substantially equivalent to the knowledge and understanding gained by completion of a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • C. A combination of college training in engineering and experience mentioned in B that is substantively equivalent to completion of a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
  • Experience Requirements

    Engineers at the VI level must have at least 4 years of engineering experience, 1 year of supervisory or staff advisory experience, 0 years of administrative experience, for a total of 5 years of experience. At least one year of the required engineering experience must be comparable to the next lower level.

    Engineering Experience

    Progressively responsible professional engineering experience that required the application of basic physical and mathematical sciences and engineering sciences to the solution of theoretical or practical engineering problems. Example qualifications include:

  • Development and design of machines, equipment, structures or power, water, communication or transportation systems and facilities or preparation of development, design or construction specifications involving mechanics, material properties and other engineering knowledge.
  • Original research in one or more branches of engineering, developing engineering applications of physical and other scientific principles.
  • Administration of engineering programs and projects, involving analysis of requirements for equipment and materials, study of technical feasibility and cost, selection of approach and direction of problem solution.
  • Interpretation of systems operational requirements and design of standard procedures for efficient operational use or maintenance.
  • Evaluation, investigation or survey of engineering projects, structures, devices or services.
  • Activities such as production, construction, regulation and testing when they involve engineering considerations and decisions as important and controlling elements.
  • Quality of Experience

    For the Engineer VI level, at least one year of the required engineering experience must have been comparable to the next lower level. Experience and education must demonstrate the ability to perform efficiently the duties of the position.
