Description

This posting is being used to fill various Engineer positions at the specified location. The authorized level of the position is Engineer V. Applications are being accepted down to the Engineer III in the event of recruiting difficulties.

Salary Range

The posted salary range indicates potential compensation, not necessarily starting salary. New external hires typically begin at the initial step. Placement above the initial step may be considered based on position requirements, exceptional qualifications, budget availability, and other relevant factors, all requiring prior approval. Current Hawaii State Department of Education employees will be placed according to Department regulations and applicable collective bargaining agreements.

  • Engineer III, EN‑22: $6,854.00 – $8,749.00 per month
  • Engineer IV, EN‑24: $8,465.00 – $10,804.00 per month
  • Engineer V, EN‑26: $9,141.00 – $11,669.00 per month
Examples of Duties
  • Serve as a technical expert in a specialized area or program function performing staff advisory, consulting, and review duties; lead a staff of specialists on long‑range planning, research, and development of specific projects, programs, and functions.
  • Initially review projects received, plan methods of approach, and make work assignments to supervised employees for effective use of abilities and time; stay informed on latest developments in the area of specialization and advise supervised employees of current data.
  • Provide engineering solutions, advise on appropriate methods and techniques, and determine applicability of precedents; recognize when problems should be referred to other engineers or higher authority.
  • Coordinate work with related projects within and outside the section; review technical reports, project data, and completed work for technical accuracy, adequacy, validity of conclusions, conformance to policies and regulations, consistency of test results, and feasibility of recommendations.
  • Recommend priority and duration of assigned work; prepare budget estimates for major and long‑range projects; perform personnel management functions such as selecting employees, evaluating performance, taking disciplinary action, and training new employees; initiate and prepare technical reports and correspondence.
Minimum Qualifications
Basic Education/Experience Requirements
  • Graduation from a school of engineering in an accredited college or university.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in physics, mathematics, or chemistry, plus at least 15 credits in engineering sciences common to all engineering disciplines (e.g., thermodynamics, statics, electrical science, applied mechanics, engineering drawing, strength of materials).
  • Administrative, professional, or technical experience involving the application and knowledge of the fundamental physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
Experience Requirements
  • Engineer III: 2 years engineering experience.
  • Engineer IV: 3
    * years engineering experience.
  • Engineer V: 4
    * years engineering experience; supervisory potential for Engineer V may be accepted.

For Engineers IV and V, at least one year of the required engineering experience must have been experience comparable to the next lower level.

Quality of Experience

Experience and education must demonstrate ability to perform efficiently the duties of the position; experience thresholds alone are not sufficient proof of qualification.

Substitutions Allowed
  • Master’s degree in engineering may substitute for one year of engineering experience.
  • Excess supervisory, staff advisory, or administrative experience of the required quality may be substituted for engineering experience on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Professional engineering experience that includes training subordinates, coordinating workloads, evaluating performance, and maintaining high work standards qualifies as supervisory experience.
Professional Engineering License Requirement

Applicants for Engineer IV and higher must possess a Hawaii State Certificate of Registration as a professional engineer.

Driver's License Requirement

Applicants must have a current, valid driver’s license.
