Assistant Professor (Thermofluids), Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Hawai‘i l‑time, tenure‑track. Start date January 1, 2027 or sooner. Position number 0085307.
Applicants may specialize in any area of thermal and fluid sciences within mechanical engineering. The post is pending clearance and availability of funds.
Duties and Responsibilities- Teach, conduct, and develop assigned undergraduate and graduate courses and seminars, including distance delivery modes as required, in mechanical engineering and thermal and fluid sciences.
- Develop an independent, extramurally funded research program.
- Present research at leading conferences and publish in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Supervise independent research and study activities.
- Serve as an academic advisor for undergraduate and graduate students.
- Serve on departmental, college, and university committees.
- Render service to the professional or lay community relevant to the academic specialty.
- Serve on thesis and dissertation committees for advanced degrees.
- Lead and participate in mechanical engineering initiatives at the university and College of Engineering.
- Perform related tasks as assigned by the Department Chair.
- Support recruitment, retention, and graduation of all engineering students.
- Participate in curriculum development including place‑based/Hawaii‑based learning materials and instructional methods.
- Develop research emphasis applicable to Hawaii and the Asia/Pacific region.
- Learn about and implement Native Hawaiian, Indigenous, and place‑based principles into curriculum, programming, and work culture.
- Earned Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or closely related field from a recognized institution; ABD candidates considered if Ph.D. conferred by employment start.
- Demonstrated knowledge in mechanical engineering research, specifically thermal and fluid sciences.
- Demonstrated experience in coursework and/or research in the listed areas.
- Demonstrated instructional ability.
- Demonstrated scholarly achievement via publications and/or competitive funding.
- Strong commitment to teaching, research excellence, and mentoring, with ability to serve diverse student backgrounds.
- Excellent communication skills and collaboration abilities.
- Ability to teach graduate courses in the area of specialty and undergraduate courses in mechanical engineering.
- Professionalism in meetings and collaborations.
- Teaching and research alignment with ongoing research activities in the department and university (renewable energy, environmental monitoring, sustainability, transportation, thermal management, electronics, chemical/material applications, biomedical engineering).
- Ability to collaborate with leading research units within the UH system (HNEI, SOEST, HIGP, JABSOM).
