Engineer I – Job Function
Under direct supervision of higher‑level professional engineers, performs design, project engineering, project management and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of Hawaiian Electric.
Essential Functions (Engineer I)- Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations and related engineering design in accordance with applicable codes, ordinances, and regulations.
- Conducts project design and cost alternative studies, field inspections, and prepares associated reports.
- Prepares and manages cost estimates, budgets, schedules, material and construction specifications and construction contracts for projects assigned.
- Performs project engineering and project management functions for assigned projects.
- Coordinates work by consulting engineers, evaluates proposals and bids for engineering services and equipment and makes recommendations.
- Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned, including preparation for such activities.
- Understands the company’s policies, mission, vision, values and follows the culture dimensions to ensure the success of the company.
Knowledge Requirements
- A BS degree in engineering in a discipline relevant to the Department from an accredited engineering school.
- Thorough knowledge of the theories and principles of engineering acquired through advanced college‑level courses or equivalent experience.
- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering design, project engineering, project management and construction methods associated with electric utility facilities normally acquired through a minimum of 3 years’ relevant engineering experience.
- Working knowledge of personal computers and related software applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, and ability to learn additional software tools to perform work.
- Working knowledge of LEAN continuous improvement principles and best practices to achieve operational excellence.
- Working knowledge of Safe Start principles and best practices to achieve a safe workplace environment.
- Good leadership skills including effective written, oral, listening and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
- Strong interpersonal skills to handle confrontational, difficult and/or sensitive issues with professionalism, tact, courtesy and discretion.
- In‑depth analytical and administrative skills for tasks such as preparing and monitoring project requirements and resolving cost and time constraints and conflicting priorities.
- Must have or be able to qualify for a State of Hawaii driver’s license and meet the standards for driving positions stated in the Hiring Standards for Driving Positions policy.
- Experience in the design of additions, modifications, extensions, upgrades and rearrangements of company generation, transmission, substation, and communication and control systems and facilities.
Performs design, project engineering, project management and general engineering duties in support of the capital construction programs of Hawaiian Electric. Plans and conducts work requiring judgment in the independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard techniques, procedures and criteria. Devises new approaches to problems encountered.
Essential Functions (Engineer II)- Prepares plans, layouts, design calculations, and related engineering design work in accordance with company standards, applicable codes, ordinances and regulations. Develops new or improved techniques and procedures for equipment, material, products, or methods.
- Performs project engineering and project management functions on major capital projects for Hawaiian. Works with City/County, State, and Federal government agencies on rules, regulations and permits related to projects.
