Lead Generation Mechanical Engineer

WSP’s Federal Power and Energy Team is searching for a Lead Generation Mechanical Engineer located in Boise, ;
Honolulu, HI;
Virginia Beach, VA; or Huntsville, AL. The role involves providing technical expertise on 10–20 MW campus generation design projects, managing project execution, and mentoring junior staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the design of mechanical piping and equipment for renewable and fossil power generation facilities.
  • Perform piping design activities, including sizing, pressure drop calculations, stress analysis, pipe support design, pipeline lists, and valve lists.
  • Prepare plant layout drawings.
  • Conduct high‑complexity engineering designs including analysis, calculations, research, and equipment selection.
  • Develop process flow diagrams and P&IDs for power plant systems (steam cycles, boiler feed, condensate, cooling water, water treatment, fuel gas, diesel fuel, and utilities).
  • Prepare sizing calculations, specifications, data sheets, RFQ’s, and technical bid evaluations for mechanical equipment (reciprocating engines, gas turbines, steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators, condensers, cooling towers, auxiliary boilers, tanks, pumps, etc.).
  • Apply engineering techniques, procedures, industry codes, and standards to projects.
  • Review mechanical equipment vendor drawings and data, interface and communicate with suppliers, clients, other engineering disciplines, and designers.
  • Prepare construction/installation scopes of work for mechanical systems.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams on multiple concurrent projects, assisting with installation layouts, cost and quantity calculations, and ensuring compliance with specifications, permits, and regulations.
  • Ensure project work conforms to contract, scope, specifications, permits, and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepare engineering budgets, schedules, and bills of quantities for materials, equipment, and labor.
  • Develop proposals for new work.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate deliverables.
  • Analyze, evaluate, and interpret field investigation data.
  • Comply with data integrity, documentation, training, monitoring, and record‑keeping requirements.
  • Stay current with latest mechanical engineering techniques and practices.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision‑making regarding company funds, resources, conduct, and adhere to the WSP Code of Conduct.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
  • Develop plans, specifications, cost estimates, safety and phasing plans, and update mechanical infrastructure layout plans coordinating with owners, other disciplines, sub‑consultants, and clients.
  • Provide guidance and training to entry‑level engineers.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of mechanical engineering design experience focusing on power‑generation projects, delivering design deliverables for large capital projects with single and parallel generation configurations.
  • Currently licensed professional engineer (PE).
  • U.S. citizenship required due to client requirements.
  • Knowledge of federal government project design with application of UFCs, UFGSs, FCs, NFPA standards, and ICC standards.
  • Experience in a consulting environment.
  • Proven client interaction as a senior mechanical subject‑matter expert with ability to lead and mentor others.
  • Proficient knowledge of mechanical engineering principles, practices, design‑bid‑build, design/build, and application to permitting and project work‑related issues.
  • Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including active involvement in rehabilitation and new design projects.
  • Working knowledge of relevant engineering and construction laws, codes, regulations, compliance practices, and record‑keeping requirements.
  • Ability to self‑perform all mechanical engineering tasks associated with the project: proposal, site investigation, design, engineering calculations, cost estimating, client review meetings, and on‑site construction support.
