This position heads the Field Consultant Unit of the Bridge Design Section, Design Branch, Highways Division, Department of Transportation. Duties and responsibilities include conducting preliminary location, type and cost studies; preparing, supervising and approving design computations, plan specifications and estimates for bridges, separation structures, retaining walls, pedestrian facilities, tunnels, culverts, small buildings and other structures; developing, preparing, reviewing and approving construction and maintenance plans, specifications, proposals, estimate details and computations for both State designed and consultant designed projects;

and performing other related duties as assigned.

• Professional license: Must possess a valid State of Hawaii Professional Engineer license at the time of application. Must have knowledge of principles, practices, methods and techniques of structural engineering, engineering mechanics and the mechanics of materials as it relates to structural engineering design and functions.
• Basic education: A bachelor’s degree from a school of engineering from an accredited four‑year college or university. Relevant substitutions apply.
• Note: Applicants who will graduate within three months and meet the minimum qualification requirements upon graduation will be accepted for examination. If you are graduating within three months with a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a master’s degree in a pertinent engineering field, submit a copy of your official transcript and a letter from your department head or registrar verifying current enrollment, expected graduation date and major with your application.
• Engineering experience: Four (4) years of progressively responsible professional engineering experience, including at least one (1) year of experience comparable to the next lower level. Engineer V supervisory level duties include planning, design, construction, maintenance, and operation of major and complex engineering projects or advanced independent projects. Engineer IV duties include difficult and complex work in planning, design, construction, maintenance, operation of specialized engineering projects, and research and development in a specialized field.
• Supervisory experience/aptitude or staff advisory experience: Applicants must possess supervisory experience/aptitude and/or staff advisory experience as described in the complete minimum qualification requirements.
• Driver’s license: Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
