Position: Designer III (Hybrid)

PRIMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION
  • Apply engineering practices and mathematics to prepare construction details for electric substation, transmission, and/or gas/electric/outdoor lighting distribution system designs in accordance with the latest construction, safety, and environmental standards.
  • Ascertain load requirements and perform necessary engineering to determine project cost and required construction resources.
  • Negotiate construction schedules and service dates.
  • Determine requirements to accommodate joint use with other utilities such as cable TV and telephone.
  • Initiate estimates for residential, industrial, and commercial extensions and relocations and execute contracts as appropriate.
  • Review and quote customer charges.
  • Utilize computer systems including Computer Aided Design (CAD) and ATLAS Expert Designer to review plans of proposed construction by customers and outside agencies.
  • Identify and advise on design options and special construction techniques to protect company facilities and avoid conflicts.
  • Coordinate design options with engineering personnel and consult with field forces before and during construction.
  • Conduct job site walk‑downs to obtain preliminary information, develop design details, and discuss design problems with engineers and construction personnel.
  • Maintain customer contact throughout the job to ensure mutually agreed commitments are met.
  • Coordinate with customers, property owners, attorneys, architects, realtors, contractors, builders, developers, governmental agencies, and other utilities.
  • Select and execute related documents such as contracts, permissions, rights‑of‑way, charge orders, etc.
  • Obtain authority to bill customers for amounts receivable.
  • Review joint ownership requests, construction notices, and bills arising from company work of other utility companies.
  • Perform field survey work to describe location of present and proposed facilities, obstructions, and required geographic features.
  • Interpret designs, coordinate, and approve minor field changes.
  • Handle duties across electric transmission, substation, distribution, gas, outdoor lighting, or combinations thereof, depending on the unit.
  • Work on a schedule that may include overtime and requires response to emergency events.
JOB SCOPE
  • Designer positions focus on quality assurance of design deliverables produced by BGE Contractors of Choice.
  • Develop substation standard drawings, including physical layouts and equipment configurations.
  • Create 3‑D equipment models in coordination with BGE’s Intelligent CAD Design & Standards team.
  • Report to BGE’s Lord Baltimore Building three days a week (Tuesday‑Thursday) and perform remaining work remotely.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High School Diploma and over six years of job‑related experience, including at least three years in the design or drafting of gas and/or electric utility systems; OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of mathematics, engineering and construction standards, surveying, and electrical and gas theory required to determine design requirements.
  • Familiarity with environmental permitting, rights‑of‑way requirements, and company safety standards and practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, manage, and coordinate multiple work assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct accurate field surveys and produce legible, accurate, and technically acceptable construction documents using CAD.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to negotiate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Team‑orientation and collaborative approach to work.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet company driving standards.
  • Use of personal vehicle for company business on a regular basis.
  • Completion of the Technicians Occupations Selection System Test.
  • Potential requirement to become a Notary Public in the State of Maryland, depending on assignment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience with Building Information Modeling (BIM).
  • Experience with Autodesk Vault.
  • Knowledge of electrical substation drawings and plans.
