Posting details describe a professional-level opportunity in the Power Supply Controls Department of the Operational Technology Division, focused on real-time operation technology systems (DCS) and related control engineering disciplines.

Job Function

Plans, organizes, coordinates, and supervises the Control Engineers to provide engineering and technical subject matter expertise at an OEM-expert level for the ongoing assessment, improvement, security (cyber and physical), and extension of the capabilities of real-time operation technology systems to meet safety, service reliability, availability, and system efficiency goals.

Provides hands-on support and specialized expertise for the operation and ongoing assessment, improvement, and extension of OT capabilities to ensure adequate support in meeting Company goals. Manages control system improvement programs to ensure control systems are reliable, secure, and maintain data integrity.

Essential Functions
  • Plans, organizes, coordinates, supervises and directs the Control Engineering section staff in delivering expert-level services for control/automation and instrumentation at all generating stations. Provides expert-level tuning, programming, maintenance, troubleshooting, testing, and enhancement of DCS, PLC, and instrumentation. Manages programs that support control system safety, reliability, security/integrity, which may include hardware/software replacement and/or upgrades, network, calibration, instrumentation, and alarm management. Ensures equipment hardware/software replacements or upgrades are designed, procured, and installed as necessary.

    Directs commissioning services during upgrades and new installations.
  • Evaluates progress and performance of control systems and implements actions to maintain instrument and control system/process, network reliability and security. Ensures maintenance needs, upgrades, enhancements, and tuning are identified timely and incorporated into appropriate O&M or Capital Budgets. Monitors control system performance and initiates improvements when needed.
  • Maintains operating system, application software, modeling, graphic displays, application code and databases for the DCS. Provides 24x7 support to Electric System Operations personnel in the safe and timely operation of generation control systems. Maintains process monitoring and control systems related to power generation. Provides expertise and maintenance of security functions and procedures regarding DCS applications. Implements measures to reduce system vulnerabilities and ensure compliance with internal standards and external regulations related to control system security and reliability.

    Ensures compliance with corporate security policies and documentation of exceptions.
  • Meets with internal and external parties to maintain/expedite project progress. Serves as a technical consultant to the Division, Department, Process Area and other management in HECO, MECO, and HELCO.
  • Manages and administers personnel matters of the control engineering section, including performance appraisals and interviews; recognition of employee achievements; and disciplinary actions. Ensures safety and coordinates training of all personnel under supervision.
  • Models behaviors consistent with Company values. Promotes teamwork and mentors subordinates in improvement tools and techniques to eliminate waste from daily work.
  • Applies the Daily Management System to continuously improve safety, quality, speed, timeliness, and cost of work processes within the assigned span of control.
  • Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including preparation activities for such emergencies.
