The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a strategic senior finance leader with experience in nonprofit financial management, a strong background in mission‑driven organizations, and a collaborative, forward‑thinking leadership style.
Position OverviewA well-established, mission-driven nonprofit organization in Honolulu is looking for their next CFO to provide strategic financial leadership and stewardship during a period of continued growth and community impact. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer, the CFO serves as a trusted thought partner to executive leadership and the Board, guiding long‑term financial strategy, sustainability, and risk management.
This role is intentionally designed to be strategic and forward‑looking, with day‑to‑day accounting operations led by an experienced Controller and finance team. Responsibilities- Serve as a strategic partner to the CEO and executive team on financial planning, growth, and organizational sustainability
- Provide long‑term financial modeling, forecasting, and scenario analysis to support decision‑making
- Oversee budgeting, financial reporting, payroll, accounting, and grants management at an executive level
- Present clear, actionable financial insights to senior leadership and the Board of Directors
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal and state regulations, and grant requirements
- Lead audit and Form 990 processes in partnership with external auditors
- Partner with development and program teams on grant budgeting, reporting, and restricted funds management
- Strengthen internal controls, financial policies, and risk mitigation strategies
- Continuously improve financial systems, processes, and data‑driven decision‑making
- Lead, mentor, and develop finance leadership and staff while fostering a collaborative culture
- Strategic financial leadership with the ability to connect finance to mission and impact
- Strong nonprofit accounting and grants management expertise
- Advanced budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling capabilities
- Ability to translate complex financial data into clear insights for non‑financial stakeholders
- Sound judgment, high integrity, and strong ethical standards
- Collaborative, relationship‑driven leadership style
- Comfort operating in a dynamic, entrepreneurial, and mission‑focused environment
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field
- 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience
- Prior experience in nonprofit and/or complex mission‑driven organizations
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, audits, and federal funding requirements
- Demonstrated experience overseeing budgets, forecasts, and financial strategy
- CPA or equivalent credential preferred, but not required
