SUMMARY

The Controller is responsible for overseeing the organization's accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, payroll administration, and compliance functions. Reporting to the Vice President of Finance/CFO, the Controller ensures the integrity of financial information, supports organizational decision-making, maintains compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements, and provides leadership to the Finance Department. The Controller partners with executive leadership to support strategic financial planning, budgeting, and operational excellence.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Oversees the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes.
  • Ensures timely and accurate preparation of financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
  • Maintains the integrity of the general ledger and all supporting schedules.
  • Reviews and analyzes financial results, identifies trends, and recommends corrective actions when needed.
  • Monitors cash flow, investments, and liquidity needs.
  • Provides high-level confidential support to the Finance Department and organization, including handling and maintaining confidential information and documents on a daily and on-going basis.
  • Supervises and participates in the activities of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, purchasing, and audit of daily sales.
  • Assists in the development and implementation of goals, policies, priorities, and procedures relating to financial management, budget, accounting, and/or payroll.
  • Supervises and participates in the preparation of various financial statements and reports.
  • Prepares reports required by regulatory agencies.
  • Directs the installation and maintenance of accounting records to show receipts and expenditures.
  • Directs the maintenance of general and subsidiary ledgers, accounts receivable, revenue distribution, depreciation, cost, property, and operating expenses, and insurance records.
  • Directs and participates in cost analyses and rate studies.
  • Assists in the preparation of statements and reports of estimated future costs and revenues.
  • Establishes system controls for new financial systems and develops procedures to improve existing systems.
  • Coordinates preparation of external audit materials and external financial reporting.
  • Directs the installation and maintenance of new accounting, timekeeping, payroll, inventory, property, and other related procedures and controls.
  • Conducts training as needed for other employees in the areas of Finance and payroll procedures
  • Assists the CFO in development of the annual operating and capital budgets.
  • Provides financial analysis and forecasting to support organizational planning and decision-making.
  • Serves as backup to the Vice President of Finance/CFO and may represent the Finance Department in the CFO's absence
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Directly manages all employees in the Finance department excluding the Vice President of Finance position. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; and addressing complaints and resolving problems, mentorship of junior Finance staff, and providing positive and/or curative professional feedback as appropriate.

Education and/or Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience, including at least 3-5 years in a supervisory role.
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting, fund accounting, grant management, and financial reporting strongly preferred.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation preferred.
TECHNOLOGY SKILLS:
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables, lookups, and financial modeling.
  • Experience with nonprofit accounting software and enterprise financial management systems.
  • Experience with payroll, budgeting, grant management, and financial reporting systems preferred.
  • Ability to evaluate and implement financial technology solutions and process improvements.
Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze and interpret accounting records and reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints…
