Insurance Examiner II

Overview

This posting is for the State of Hawaii, Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Insurance Division, Financial Surveillance and Examination Branch. The position is located on Oahu (Downtown Honolulu). Salary commensurate with education and experience.

The position is primarily engaged in the examination of the operations and practices of insurers. The purpose of the examination is to determine the financial condition of the institution, evaluate its management, and determine compliance with applicable laws and regulations.

• Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in economics, business administration, accounting, or a related social science. The related social science major shall include 12 semester credit hours in accounting and/or auditing subjects.
• Experience:
  1) Five years of progressively responsible work experience in accounting, auditing or examination of business operations. Three of the five years shall be in the insurance field or of auditing or financial examination of insurance business operations, which provided knowledge of the insurance industry organization, operations and practices; and laws, rules and regulations governing the conduct of such businesses.
  2) Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Knowledge: Knowledge of state laws, rules and regulations governing the conduct of the insurance business; principles and practices of accounting and auditing; insurance industry organizations, operations and practices; and financial and annual statements developed and/or approved by the NAIC.
• Skills/Abilities: Conduct examinations of insurance companies; detect and critically analyze irregularities and deficiencies of company operations; examine, verify and reconcile various financial accounts and records; prepare clear and concise reports, and make recommendations based on findings; establish and maintain effective working relationships with business executives, public officials and the general public; plan, assign and review the work of others. Proficiency in computers, computer software (including, but not limited to, Lotus, Excel, Microsoft Word and NAIC programs) and the calculator by touch is required.
• Legal Authorization to Work Requirement: The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.

This position is exempt from the civil service and considered temporary in nature. Therefore, if you are appointed to the position, your employment will be considered to be "at will," which means that you may be discharged from your employment by the department head or designee at any time.
