Job Summary
Reporting directly to the Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, the Assistant Vice President, Treasury and Financial Services is a senior finance leader responsible for overseeing the University’s treasury operations, student accounts, bond portfolio, investment liquidity, and the flow of externally sponsored funds. This position plays a critical role in safeguarding institutional liquidity, strengthening cash management practices, supporting regulatory and audit compliance, and ensuring sound stewardship of University financial resources.
The AVP provides strategic and operational leadership for Student Accounts, treasury and banking operations, oversight of the University’s bond portfolio, and investment liquidity management. In addition, this role provides financial leadership for Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP) audit coordination and funds flow, ensuring alignment with sponsor requirements, internal controls, and University policies. The position serves as a key member of the CFO’s leadership team and interacts regularly with executive leadership, external auditors, banks, bond advisors, investment managers, and other financial counter parties.
LocationThis on-site position will sit in the Business Office at our Waterfront Plaza campus site in downtown (Ala Moana) Honolulu.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, business, or a related field; and/or
- Minimum seven (7) years of progressively responsible experience in treasury, finance, accounting, or financial services.
- Knowledge of accounting systems and internal control requirements.
- Thorough knowledge of GAAP, fund/governmental accounting practice and principles, and Accounting Standards Codification (ASC).
- Demonstrated experience overseeing cash management, banking relationships, and liquidity forecasting.
- Strong analytical, written, and oral communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook
- Master’s degree in finance, accounting, business administration, or a related field.
- Experience in higher education or a complex nonprofit organization.
- Experience with debt management, bond financing, or interaction with rating agencies and bondholders.
- Familiarity with sponsored program funding, compliance, and audit requirements.
- Experience with enterprise financial systems (e.g., Ellucian Banner) and banking platforms.
- CPA, CFA, or similar professional credential.
- Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship and relocation allowance are not available for this position.
- Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU’s winter break, if necessary.
- This position may be considered an essential position with report to work obligations depending on the type of emergency, campus closure, or evacuation.
- Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
- Upon hire, must maintain reliable personal transportation to facilitate travel between to all HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position. This includes a valid driver’s license and a personal vehicle that is legally registered and insured.
- Able to work all shifts and extended hours, as applicable.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment requiring excellent time and stress management skills.
- Provide integrated oversight of the University’s treasury functions, bond portfolio, and investment liquidity, including cash positioning, liquidity forecasting, monitoring covenant compliance and continuing disclosure requirements, and ensuring adherence to investment policies.
- Coordinate with the CFO, bond counsel, financial advisors, banks, investment managers, and external auditors on treasury, debt, and liquidity‑related matters.
- Direct short‑term investment and liquidity strategies to optimize safety of principal, liquidity, and yield in alignment with University policy and operational needs.
