Department of Customer Services (CSD) is hiring for three (3)
Motor Vehicle Control Inspector I positions located at Kapahulu Reconstruction Station. These positions perform duties pertaining to the enforcement of rules, regulations and procedures governing common carrier companies and motor vehicle safety inspection stations in assigned areas.
- Vehicle Compliance Inspections:
Inspect taxis, tours, tow/company vehicles, school buses, passenger/freight vehicles, and reconstructed vehicles for adherence to City and State safety laws; issue citations for violations. - Complaint Investigations:
Investigates complaints on Periodic Motor Vehicle Inspection violations; recommend disciplinary actions and prepare appeal hearing documentation. - Station Licensing & Oversight:
Manage licensing of safety inspection stations and adjustors; conduct unannounced inspections, review applications, administer exams, and perform covert surveillance on suspected violators. - Safety Enforcement & Citation:
Enforce rules on carrier vehicles, taxicabs, and tour vehicles by inspecting safety equipment and verifying driver credentials; issue citations for infractions.

Education RequirementEquivalent to graduation from high school. Responsible work experience demonstrating the ability to perform the essential functions of the job may be substituted for education.
Experience RequirementTwo (2) years of experience in inspectional, investigative, instructional or repair work which shall have included ascertaining the overall mechanical, operating and safety condition of motor vehicles.
Applicable Skills Needed- In-depth knowledge of traffic safety laws, passenger carrier regulations, and vehicle safety equipment
- Proficient in using motor vehicle safety test equipment and investigative inspection techniques
- Skilled at interpreting regulations and preparing clear, concise reports
- Strong communication skills for explaining rules and handling public interactions tactfully
Possession of a valid appropriate driver's license (automobile/Type
3), prior to appointment.
Possession of a special police commission prior to completion of probation. During the probationary period, selectees shall be fingerprinted, photographed, and subject to a background investigation by the Honolulu Police Department (HPD).
