Duties Summary

Motor Carrier Safety Officers are responsible for enforcing laws related to commercial vehicles including regulations relating to vehicle registration, safety and vehicle weight limits. Duties include conducting investigations, inspections and compliance surveys.

The Motor Carrier Safety Officer I is the entry level worker in the series. Positions in this class receive formal and on-the-job training on motor carrier safety rules and regulations, inspection practices and procedures, and accident investigation techniques; and perform other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

To qualify, applicants must meet ALL of the following requirements:

Legal Authorization To Work Requirement:
The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.

General

Experience:

One (1) year of work experience which demonstrated knowledge of arithmetic, including multiplication and division; and the ability to read, understand, and explain rules and regulations; conduct inspections or investigations to check for noncompliance with laws, rules and regulations; follow verbal and written instructions; and prepare clear, concise reports.

Lifting Requirement:
All positions require the ability to lift and carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds assisted by another person and/or use of equipment (e.g. hoisting equipment, hand truck) with or without reasonable accommodation.

Driver's License Requirement:
For all positions, applicants must possess a valid driver's license, at the time of appointment.

State's Measure master License:
