Position: FOOD SAFETY SPECIALIST I AND II - HALAWA VALLEY, OAHU

Role Overview

Food Safety Specialists promote, protect, and maintain a healthy and safe environment for the public. Through inspection, education, and enforcement activities they implement statutes, rules, and regulations related to environmental sanitation and safety programs concerning foods, drugs, cosmetics, and medical devices. Their work includes identifying, mitigating, and preventing disease transmission through improperly prepared foods, contaminated waters, and adulteration or misbranding.

Responsibilities
  • Entry‑level (Food Safety Specialist I):
    Receive formal and on‑the‑job training in field activities such as investigations and inspections, developing an understanding of relevant laws, rules, regulations, and precedent cases.
  • Advanced trainee (Food Safety Specialist II):
    Perform limited environmental sanitation work, receive complaints, conduct inspections, issue citations for violations, investigate and recommend corrective measures, and perform related duties.
Qualifications
  • Legal authorization to work: Must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in one of the physical or biological sciences from an accredited four‑year college or university.
  • Professional specialized experience: No experience required for Level I; at least six months of professional inspectional or investigational work experience for Level II, demonstrating knowledge of environmental health program principles, regulations, and relevant sciences.
  • Driver’s license: Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
