General
Summary:
Under the direct supervision of the Public Information Staff Officer this position assists in planning and executing a wide range of public information activities focused on hazard awareness, disaster preparedness and dissemination of emergency information. This position primarily focuses on assisting with the development of public information materials for distribution via social media, web and print.
Social Media Content Development
- Assist in the development of social media strategies and content to increase public awareness of hazards that may impact Oahu and promote actions that will increase individual, family and community safety and readiness for emergencies and disasters.
- Help create and maintain templates for social media posts to be used during emergencies to share emergency instructions and available resources with the public.
- Maintain an annual calendar of planned social media engagements.
- Track and report on the Department’s social media analytics to measure performance.
- Help research best practices and case studies related to the use of social media in disasters and formulate recommendations to Department leadership.
- Maintain a review calendar for the Department’s website. Help the Public Information Staff Officer conduct scheduled content reviews and make necessary updates, which may include evaluating site organization, reviewing material for readability and accuracy, updating graphics and links.
- Assist with the development of new web content and graphics.
- Assist in the development and maintenance of information brochures and handouts promoting hazard awareness and disaster preparedness to both the general public and targeted audiences.
- Assist with the layout and design, content development, copy editing and printing.
- Maintain a library of current products and a review schedule. Notify Department staff of new, updated, and/or retired publications.
- Help maintain a schedule of public outreach events, such as information talks, community fairs or booths.
- Assist the Public Information Staff Officer with the development of display materials for outreach events, printing, and assembly of supplies.
Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from an accredited college or university with major work in journalism, communications, or a related field and one year of professional experience in researching, analyzing, organizing and preparing written information for dissemination to the print and broadcast news media.
License Requirement:None
Knowledge of:publicity methods and media; principles and techniques used in writing informational material; techniques used in preparing and editing copy for printing; local government organization, functions and operations.
Ability to:write and speak effectively; secure, evaluate and present facts accurately and concisely; work well with people; communicate effectively with various segments of the public; assist in planning and administering informational programs.
