Duties Summary

Positions in the Investigator series perform and/or supervise investigations concerned with suspected or actual violations of civil, administrative and/or criminal laws, rules, regulations or other legal requirements.

Performs a limited range of investigative activities in the prevention and detection of violations of laws, rules and regulations falling within an agency's jurisdiction; gathers information; prepares reports; and performs other related duties as assigned.

As the advanced trainee, assignments are limited in nature and scope. Positions in this class work with higher level investigators and may be assigned segments of investigative cases. Investigators at this level observe higher level investigators, study assigned case materials, interview people to verify facts or obtain specific information, secure documentary evidence and learn and apply investigative principles and techniques, all in preparation for work at higher levels.

Close supervision is received on unusual or difficult assignments, with supervision and guidance gradually diminishing as the investigator gains experience. Completed work is reviewed for technical accuracy and adequacy and to assess the investigator's work progress.

To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:

The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited four‑year college or university.

Professional investigative experience which demonstrated:

• Initiative, ingenuity, resourcefulness, and judgment required to collect, assemble, and develop facts and other pertinent data;
• Ability to think logically and objectively, to analyze and evaluate facts, evidence and related information, and arrive at sound conclusions;
• Skill in written and oral reports and presentation of investigative findings in a clear and concise manner; and
• Tact, discretion, and capacity for obtaining the cooperation and confidence of others.

Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements, will apply.

Some positions require possession of a valid driver's license at the time of appointment. The current vacancy position has this requirement.
