As an apprentice, performs a variety of barbering services at a main branch or location haircare facility for authorized military and civilian personnel, working under the supervision of a licensed Barber.
Responsibilities- Under the supervision of a licensed Barber, provide barbering hair care services, including shampooing and conditioning, cutting and shaping sideburns, nape, and other head portions into suitable styles.
- Perform shaves, face styles, mustache and beard grooming, as well as neck, face and scalp massages.
- Check clients’ scalp and hair for visible disorders such as sores, abrasions, and diseases that may interfere with requested services.
- Consult clients on hair care needs.
- Maintain combs in solution and sanitize equipment with chemical or physical agents.
- Ensure cleanliness of the workstation and shop, prepare shampoo and towels to minimize service delays.
- Make minor repairs on equipment (e.g., replace switches, plugs, cords).
- Operate the cash register, prepare service chits, collect and account for cash, and balance daily sales using the Salesperson’s Daily Cash Report.
- Sell hair care products, maintain the daily appointment book by client name, time, and assigned barber.
- Assist with monthly inventory tasks.
- Carry out courtesy and customer service policies, ensuring 100% client satisfaction.
- Work under the general supervision of a designated supervisor and follow prescribed policies and procedures.
- Have work reviewed regarding quality of services and client satisfaction achieved.
- Perform other related duties assigned.
Requires continual use of both arms and legs with frequent standing, reaching, and light lifting of objects that rarely exceed 5 pounds. Dexterity is required for manual techniques.
Working ConditionsWork performed inside a haircare facility with proper lighting, plumbing, heating, adequate aisle space, strong water pressure, sufficient hot water, and adequate electric power. Incumbent may be exposed to cuts, burns, strains, electric shock, and communicable diseases, and must wear a smock and wash hands thoroughly and frequently.
Medical Screening RequirementAll barber shop and beauty shop employees, including contract personnel, must be medically screened and determined to be free of communicable diseases prior to initial assignment. Periodic examinations are not required except for local reasons.
Education and LicenseProof of enrollment in a state-accredited professional barber school or completion of a military barber school. Obtain a valid state barber license within 2 years of employment in the Barber Apprentice Program.
