Medical Technologist & Lab Technician
Work Schedule
The position is Monday–Friday, 9:00AM–5:30PM, with occasional weekend or holiday coverage as needed. Schedule may vary.
The role includes providing in‑depth technical information and working independently with minimal supervision. The individual must communicate effectively with other healthcare professionals.
- Assist the management team in everyday departmental operations, including scheduling, inventory, and ordering.
- Manage personnel evaluation and oversee technical aspects and quality of work.
- Act as a point person for problem solving during shift hours.
- Accurately perform laboratory testing by using advanced clinical laboratory instrumentation and equipment per SOPs.
- Detect and correct instrument malfunctions, record troubleshooting activities, and confirm and verify test results.
- Monitor results for reasonableness and critical values, and correlate/interpreting data to support physician interpretation.
- Establish quality control and performance improvement activities, including instrument and assay validations.
- Develop and conduct training/competency checklists and provide clinical orientation and training for new, current employees, and students.
- Direct storage of hazardous materials and maintain the laboratory safety program in partnership with the safety manager.
- Prepare and collect specimens (blood, urine, feces, or other body fluids) for analysis.
- Participate in Continuous System Improvement and continuing education programs.
- Perform duties delegated by the laboratory director per HNL’s delegation policy.
- Meet CLIA 88 personnel requirements for moderate and high complexity testing or the equivalent grandfathered medical technologist requirements.
- Bachelor’s degree in medical technology or related science from an accredited institution, or Associate’s Degree plus three years of experience.
- Knowledge and skills in executing laboratory procedures with independent judgment.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific journals, reports, and legal documents.
- Mathematical skills including probability, statistical inference, geometry, trigonometry, fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
- Reasoning skills to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw conclusions independently.
- Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office and Laboratory Information System software.
- Preferred specialty certification (e.g., ASCP, ASMT, NCA) and active pursuit of certification within chosen clinical expertise.
