Exempt, non-civil service appointment. The purpose of the Genomic Environmental Monitoring (GEM) Project is to research, develop, and incorporate molecular sequencing and metagenomics through environmental monitoring schemes.

The GEM Senior Environmental Molecular Microbiologist is assigned to the Vector Control Branch whose major function is to be responsible for leading all laboratory activities related to the GEM Project. Duties include protocol development, oversight of microbiological testing and analysis including molecular and genomic analysis, procurement, maintenance and operation of laboratory equipment, and project evaluation, outreach and reporting. The position also provides supervisory capacity and training for laboratory staff involved in GEM.

Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in microbiology, bacteriology, molecular biology, molecular cell biology, or another closely related science.

Two (2) years of experience which demonstrated possession of knowledge and abilities required to detect, isolate, identify, cultivate, use, control, and/or analyze microorganisms. Such experience may have been gained in such scientific disciplines such as but not limited to bacteriology, immunology, serology, mycology, parasitology, virology, or other related areas of science.

Satisfactory completion of all academic requirements for a master’s degree from an accredited university with specialization in microbiology, serology, mycology, parasitology, virology, or other closely related science may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.

Satisfactory completion of all academic requirements for a Ph.D. degree from an accredited university with specialization in one of the fields mentioned in education above may be substituted for two (2) years of the required experience.

This position is eligible for a hybrid telework work schedule after completion of six months of credible service and upon approval by the supervisor.

This position is exempt from civil service and considered temporary by nature. Therefore, if you are appointed to the position, your employment will be considered to be “at will,” which means that you may be discharged from your employment at the prerogative of your department head or designee at any time.
