Job FunctionServes as a technical specialist responsible for monitoring, operating, and troubleshooting the network and security status of all components comprising Hawaiian Electric networks, systems, and software. Works as a member of the Network Operations and Security Center (NOSC) team providing 24x7 operations and security monitoring.
Essential Functions- Perform proactive monitoring of system and network alarms and alerts to identify components that may cause degradation or failure.
- Perform security monitoring, fault isolation, and diagnostic functions, including real‑time corrective actions. Use network and system management platforms to remotely access and analyze systems, nodes, and devices.
- Interface with functional users, NOSC support personnel, and management for routine and reactive monitoring; execute reporting and data input for NOSC operations and ticket management.
- Maintain inventory in conjunction with the Desktop Services Section, ensuring adequate maintenance coverage.
- Document data and telecommunication networks, servers, software, and service configurations; update and maintain configuration tables and drawings.
- Analyze network traffic data, throughput, reliability, and other characteristics related to efficient operation and support of networks and systems.
- Participate in company emergency response activities as assigned.
- Knowledge of a wide range of communications concepts, principles, and practices, and of communications equipment including IP routers, switches, firewalls, LAN/WAN components, and other sub‑systems.
- Knowledge of IT principles normally acquired through college‑level courses or equivalent experience.
- Working knowledge of Linux, Windows, macOS, communications messaging ports and protocols, computer directory services, and system architecture protocols.
- Knowledge of trouble‑ticketing systems and performance/trend analysis tools.
- Knowledge of telecommunications areas such as cryptographic systems, computer security, and access control procedures.
- Knowledge of automation tools including Python scripting and API use.
- Ability to remain flexible in a demanding work environment and adapt to rapidly changing priorities.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills with peers, users, and management.
- Analytical, organizational, and conceptual skills to handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Strong interpersonal skills to influence and persuade various groups or individuals.
- Aptitude for learning, identifying problems, and finding solutions.
- Three years of practical experience with IT systems and telecommunications hardware, including some experience with network installation, administration, and troubleshooting.
