Department of the Corporation Counsel, Litigation Division is hiring a Claims Management Specialist in Honolulu. This position investigates, evaluates, and manages property damage, personal injury, and liability claims involving the City, working closely with legal staff, claimants, and other agencies to support timely and fair claim resolutions.
What You’ll Do- Investigate claims by gathering evidence, conducting site visits, and interviewing involved parties.
- Evaluate liability, damages, coverage, and applicable laws to adjust claims and make sound recommendations.
- Prepare clear reports and assist in negotiating fair settlements.
- Coordinate with relevant City departments, claimants, and others to ensure compliance and resolution of claims.
- Work schedule may be adjusted to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Must be physically able to efficiently and effectively perform investigative work that requires moderate to arduous physical exertion. This includes:
- Ascending and descending ladders, scaffolds, and stairs.
- Moving safely over uneven terrain or in confined spaces to access and investigate sites.
- Traversing regular and steep terrain.
- Bending, crawling on hands and knees, and/or reaching and lifting to perform inspections.
- Lifting and carrying or otherwise moving 25 pounds.
- Use of a personal vehicle is required to drive to various locations for investigations and site visits.

Qualifications- Citizenship:
Must be a citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States or a non‑citizen eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment. - Education:
Equivalent to a bachelor's degree. Work experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis. Examples: four years of professional work experience in any occupation; or four years of general work experience in claims adjustment. - Experience:
Two years of progressively responsible professional work experience involving investigating, analyzing, adjusting, and settling claims of liability, property damage, and/or automobile cases for insurance or self‑insured programs. - Skills:
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of insurance claims adjusting.
- Knowledge of risk management principles, concepts, and practices.
- Knowledge of claims investigations and settlement techniques.
- Knowledge of interviewing and investigating methods and techniques.
- Ability to investigate, evaluate, adjust, and settle liability, property, personal injury, and automobile claims.
- Ability to read and evaluate medical reports relating to claims for injury.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment in analyzing and evaluating a wide variety of claim data to identify issues and make recommendations for adjustment.
- License:
Possession of a valid driver's license (Type 3/automobile).
