Job Purpose/

Summary:

This position is responsible for developing, implementing and executing the insurance programs applicable to all lines of business and claims management for Young Brothers, LLC. Responsible for managing inland and ocean marine claims including vessel damage, cargo, property damage, and third-party claims. Also responsible for managing personal injury claims including workers' compensation and Jones Act crew claims. This position works cross-functionally with key stakeholders and senior management to provide transparency to risk exposures and to propose cost effective risk management strategies.

Essential Functions:

Claim Related Functions
  • Manage and report claims to insurers, including hull & machinery, property, cargo, auto, workers compensation, injury/illness, and other claims (e.g., EPLI, E&O, D&O reporting).
  • Oversee the preparation and submission of claims packages to insurers and their timely settlement on behalf of Young Brothers's various operating company Jones Act vessels, and cargo claims filed by customers of Young Brothers subsidiaries.
  • Analyze recoverability and work with underwriters and adjusters to obtain proper insurance recoveries.
  • Partner with brokers to ensure proper insurance policies are in place and, if required, procure additional insurance coverage to minimize premium cost while keeping the potential for unexpected losses within acceptable limits.
  • Manage relationships with brokers, underwriters, third party claims administrators, and other service providers.
  • Participate in immediate response (day or night) to significant incidents, including appointing and coordinating internal and external stakeholders.
  • Supervise the administration and settlement of marine claims which include hull & machinery, pollution, dock damage, protection & indemnity, and charterer's legal liability/FD&D.
  • Reviews insurance and claims provisions of contracts.
  • Manage CMS compliance, self-insurance, and other regulatory or insurance reporting requirements.
  • Ensure that our risk management information system (Origami) produces reliable and accurate information.
  • Review and monitor adequacy of claims reserves.
  • Participate in the selection of insurance companies and lead Young Brothers negotiations regarding terms and premiums of insurance policies through close collaboration with insurance brokers and underwriters.
  • Under direction of the General Counsel, manage and direct outside attorneys in litigated/represented matters.
  • Represent Young Brothers in mediation and settlement conferences.
  • Pursue third party subrogation claims.
  • Prepare written procedures for key risk management processes, providing live training sessions as needed.
  • Support the General Counsel on special projects.

Knowledge

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to manage and improve both personal injury and physical asset claims management processes; hull and machinery experience is expected.
  • Abilities to identify local, state, and federal regulatory requirements.
  • Knowledge of internal audit practices.
  • Abilities to manage multiple priorities with frequent interruptions, and can hit deadlines.
  • Must have strong written/verbal communication skills, including good command of the English language, and can work with a wide variety of stakeholders with various backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive company information well.
  • Must have demonstrated proficiency with Origami and MS Office suite, including Outlook.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
