Residence Hall Director

Position Summary

The Residence Hall Director is responsible for the out-of-class living/learning experience for the students in residence and assisting with the training and supervision of the student residence staff. This includes residence life, residential student activities, developmental programs, and student discipline of violations occurring within the halls. This position also has administrative responsibilities in conjunction with these efforts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Residence Hall and Student Development (60%)

  • Work with the Director of Residence Life to:
  • Select, train, supervise, and evaluate student residence hall staff.
  • Assist with staff training, and prepare appropriate support materials.
  • Assist with monitoring student housing assignments and roommate pairings.
  • Facilitate opening of residence halls, closing during breaks and administer the check-in and check-out of students.
  • Coordinate planning of hall activities with resident assistants and other Student Affairs staff to assure that a well-rounded, developmentally sound, and community enhancing calendar of activities is offered for all residents.
  • Ensure that facilities remain in a well-maintained, safe, and sanitary condition for residents through timely reporting of needs to appropriate support operations.
  • Along with the Director of Residence Life, serve as the point of first contact for any behavioral, psychological, or medical emergencies in the residence halls.
  • Serve in a cycle of duty rotation with other Residence Hall Directors and/or the Director of Residence Life to assure a continuing professional presence in the halls during evening and weekend hours.
  • Coordinate faculty and other staff involvement in conjunction with providing academic support and services.
  • Develop an effective working relationship with other offices, e.g. Facilities, Security, Learning Center, and Counseling Center.
  • Coordinate with Student Support Services and Residence Life to train Peer Leaders, Orientation Leaders, and Resident Assistants on various topics such as diversity issues specific to the residents that reside in housing.
  • Coordinates trainings and workshops for first year and transfer students to assist them with the transition to campus life.
  • Coordinates the ongoing data collection and analysis of all residence life programs and services.

Judicial Affairs Duties (20%)

  • Serve as the first level of disciplinary process on all non-suspendable violations of the student code of conduct occurring within the halls.
  • Support the Director on all non-suspendable disciplinary matters involving infractions connected with the residence halls or apartments, handling dispositions of such matters in a developmentally sound, consistent manner, stressing the personal growth potential of such encounters.

Reporting and Supervision (20%)

  • Keep Director of Residence Life informed about activities, programs, and concerns in the residence halls.
  • Advise the Director regarding all aspects of the residential life program and general students' development issues.
  • Will be evaluated by the Director of Residence Life at least once during the academic year.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the Director of Residence Life.
  • While on duty, maintain daily contact with resident assistants through radio and cellular phone.
  • Meet collectively on a weekly basis with Resident Assistants/Desk Assistants during the regular staff meeting held on Fridays at 12:30pm for training and information exchange sessions to develop their skills in promoting student development.
  • Assume responsibility for supervising, training, and evaluating Resident Assistants/Desk Assistants/RHA.
  • Develop staff into a cohesive, well-functioning group with positive attitudes.

Education and Experience

Minimum Bachelor's degree required. Must be enrolled in a Chaminade University Masters Program.
