Project Manager / Senior Project Manager – Hawaiian Electric Companies

Position Summary: The Project Manager or Senior Project Manager will drive critical annual and long‑term investment objectives for projects and programs that enhance reliability, resiliency, and service across Oahu, Maui County, and Hawaii Island. The role involves project initialization, planning, alternatives evaluation, and efficiency drives to meet corporate budget and KPI goals.

Responsibilities
  • Provide project management expertise to develop scope, schedule, and cost estimates for T&D projects and programs.
  • Anticipate challenges and develop strategies to address them.
  • Coordinate with planning and internal departments to finalize project scopes and determine best solutions.
  • Initiate projects and programs in alignment with corporate budget processes.
  • Coordinate across multiple divisions to input projects into the company portfolio for executive review.
  • Confirm and clarify project initiation scope, stakeholders, requirements, milestones, risks, and constraints.
  • Develop and maintain schedules, scope, and cost estimates; manage all initialization tasks including resources, controls, risk, and contingency measures.
  • Evaluate alternative scenarios, identify schedule and cost implications, and assess risks.
  • Drive efficiency through standardized T&D engineering design and materials.
  • Monitor and analyze metrics, KPIs, and performance‑based metrics.
  • Serve as a focal point for all project initialization matters and ensure all objectives are met.
  • Provide project leadership; secure commitment from all levels and assess team performance.
  • Maintain current industry knowledge, participate in professional committees, and support department improvement efforts.
  • Participate in emergency response activities as assigned.
Qualifications Knowledge
  • In‑depth knowledge of project engineering, project management, and construction methods for electric utility transmission or distribution.
  • Knowledge of Earned Value analysis.
  • Understanding of applicable laws, regulations, codes, budgeting, forecasting, procurement procedures, asset strategies, reliability, and resiliency plans.
  • Familiarity with facility siting, permitting, land‑use issues, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Proficiency in MS Project, UI Planner, Ellipse, Microsoft Office, SAP, CIS, and other related software.
Skills
  • Expert project management, planning, and execution in high‑pressure environments.
  • Advanced communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, professional, and team‑leadership abilities.
  • Conflict resolution, critical thinking, analytical, and problem‑solving expertise.
  • Proficiency with project scheduling, spreadsheets, databases, and word processing.
  • Ability to develop and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Time management and flexibility to handle multiple assignments.
Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Land Use Planning, or equivalent; professional engineer or planner certification preferred.
  • Extensive (8+ years) experience as a project manager, construction manager, designer, or engineer in large complex projects, preferably in the electric utility industry.
  • Several (3‑5) years of project management experience for small to large engineering/construction projects.
  • Several (3‑5) years of experience with regulatory, social, and public affairs processes.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification desired.
  • State of Hawaii professional engineer license or planner certification preferred.
