Safety Management Specialist IV – $5,527 to $6,728 per month (SR-22, Step D to I)
Safety Management Specialist V – $6,221 to 7,568 per month (SR-24, Step D to I)
Note: Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, applicant’s qualifications and other relevant factors.
Job OverviewThe Safety Management Specialist (SMS) IV plans, organizes and executes safety and certification programs for airport operations, including aircraft rescue and firefighting. It implements SMS to assess safety management components such as safety policy, safety risk management, safety assurance and safety promotion. The SMS IV collects and analyzes data, provides system evaluation, takes corrective action as needed, and may perform internal evaluations.
The Safety Management Specialist (SMS) V plans, coordinates and implements safety and certification programs for airport operations, including aircraft rescue and firefighting. It supervises and directs staff specialists in the evaluation of airport certification and safety programs, provides technical and staff support in evaluating airport facilities and operations under FAA regulations, HIOS law and other applicable federal and local laws. The SMS V mitigates wildlife hazards and conducts inspections, evaluations and studies of airport facilities and operations to identify and correct deficiencies.
QualificationsEducation
Graduation from an accredited four‑year college or university with a bachelor’s degree.
Specialized Experience
- Progressively responsible professional work experience in a safety or risk management program with responsibility for developing policies and procedures.
- Conducting inspections and evaluations of facilities and operations for compliance.
- Recommending and implementing corrective actions.
- Developing training curriculum and conducting training of personnel.
Such work experience may have been performed in a line, staff or management capacity, and must have demonstrated strong technical knowledge of FAA directives, laws, rules and regulations relating to airport certification and safety.
SMS Level Experience
Level IV: Two and one‑half (2‑1/2) years of progressively professional work experience as noted above.
Level V: Three and one‑half (3‑1/2) years of progressively professional work experience as noted above.
Supervisory Experience
- Planning, organizing, scheduling and directing the work of others.
- Assigning and reviewing their work.
- Advising them on difficult work problems.
- Training and developing subordinates.
- Evaluating their work performance.
Supervisory Aptitude
Applicants for some positions must possess supervisory aptitude. Supervisory aptitude is demonstrated through successful completion of assignments or training that involve supervisory responsibilities, or through favorable supervisor appraisals indicating supervisory potential.
Supervisory Aptitude and Experience Requirements
Level IV: Must demonstrate supervisory aptitude.
Level V: One (1) year of supervisory experience.
Driver’s License
Applicants must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment.
Security Identification Area (SIDA) ClearanceIndividuals considered for positions requiring unescorted access to secured airport areas must undergo a fingerprint‑based criminal history record check. Applicants must not have been convicted, or found not guilty by reason of insanity, of a disqualifying criminal offense within ten years from the date of application. Successful completion of the criminal history check is required for SIDA clearance.
