DESCRIPTION:
The P PF PROJECT INITIALIZATION Department of the P INVESTMENT PLANNING & STRATEGY Division at Hawaiian Electric Company has one management vacancy available for the role of Project Manager or Senior Project Manager, depending on candidate qualifications.
Project ManagerJOB FUNCTION:
Drives the critical annual and long‑term (5‑10 years) investment objectives for projects and programs that enhance reliability, resiliency, and service across Oahu, Maui County, and Hawaii Island. Establishes projects and programs to achieve performance‑based investments.
Provides project management expertise required to develop the scope for T&D projects and programs in sufficient detail to create a schedule and cost Class Level 4 estimates for initialization.
Anticipates potential challenges, provides expertise, and develops strategies to address them.
Collaborates with the Planning Department and other internal units to finalize project scopes; evaluates alternatives to develop schedule, costs, and risks.
Initiates projects and programs aligned with the corporate budget process.
Coordinates across multiple divisions as part of the asset strategy investment planning process to input projects and programs into the company portfolio for executive approval.
Confirms/clarifies project initiation scope, stakeholders, requirements, expectations, goals, objectives, deliverables, constraints, risks, and milestones.
Develops and maintains project initiation schedule, scope, and costs.
Organizes and manages all project initiation tasks, including team roles, resources, schedule, cost controls, risk and contingency measures, performance criteria, budgeting, and communications.
Develops strategies to meet project goals and identifies potential problem areas early.
Evaluates alternative scenarios to achieve a functional project scope, coordinating stakeholders to assess schedule, cost, and risk implications.
Drives efficiency through the utilization of standardized T&D engineering design and materials.
Works with the Conceptual Engineering Department and other departments to ensure materials and equipment meet design specifications and technical requirements.
Develops, monitors, and analyzes metrics to track project progress and performance, including performance‑based metrics and KPIs for the division and process areas as needed.
Ensures budgeted goals and performance outcomes are achieved using Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).
Serves as focal point for all project initialization matters and meets all project‑related objectives.
Provides project leadership, directs work, and secures commitment from all levels in the company to ensure team members meet all project initiation milestones.
Ensures team members have necessary resources, information, and direction to perform their jobs successfully.
Assesses progress and performance of team members, recommending actions to achieve objectives.
Keeps up to date with industry practices, tools, and techniques in utilities project management.
Represents Hawaiian Electric in industry and project management committees, developing forward‑thinking recommendations and guidelines.
Supports the department manager in developing systems, processes, and procedures for effective department functioning.
Participates in company emergency response activities as assigned, including preparations for such response.
- In‑depth knowledge of project engineering, project management, and construction methods for electric utility transmission or distribution gained through relevant experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Land Use Planning, or equivalent experience is required.
- Expertise in project and program management, including Earned Value analysis.
- Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and codes for design and construction of electric utility facilities.
