This posting is for the State of Hawaii, Department of Labor and Industrial Relations, Hawaii Occupational Safety and Health Division. This position is located on the Island of Oahu. Salary: $5,338 to $6,754 per month - SR-21, Step C to I. Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, the applicant's qualifications, and other relevant factors.

ResponsibilitiesConducts inspections of boilers, pressure vessels, and other related equipment for compliance with pertinent laws, rules and regulations; inspects the quality control system of shops which manufacture boilers or pressure vessels and the design of each boiler or pressure vessel for compliance with established standards; recommends the withholding of permits to operate boilers and related machinery; issues orders to correct violations;
prepares reports of violations and recommendations; and performs other related duties as required.
Inspects boilers and pressure vessels and other related equipment as to their design, construction, installation, operation and maintenance for compliance with safety code requirements; inspects the quality control system of shops which manufacture boilers or pressure vessels for compliance with established standards; prepares data sheets, inspection reports and recommends penalties with citations; advises designers, manufacturers and installers regarding requirements of established standards;
initiates correspondence on matters pertaining to boilers, pressure vessels and other machinery; advises owners and operators of machinery of unsafe conditions; recommends the withholding of permits to operate boilers, pressure vessels and other machinery until violations or unsafe conditions are remedied by owners and/or operators; recommends revisions to laws, rules and regulations governing boilers, pressure vessels, and other related equipment;
may intercede in disputes between owners and/or operators of equipment and machinery and certified inspectors; may review inspection reports of non-governmental certified boiler inspectors for reported violations and unsafe conditions.
Knowledge of: Safety inspection and investigation methods and techniques; occupational safety and health laws and codes, and rules and regulations, pertaining to the design, construction, installation, maintenance and operation of boilers, pressure vessels and other related equipment; report writing.
Ability to: Adhere to inspectional and investigational requirements, and maintain effective relationships with employers, employer representatives, employees and others; detect unsafe conditions and practices and recommend corrections; interpret the codes and regulations and perform design calculations pertaining to boilers, pressure vessels and related equipment; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other inspectors, operators and owners of machinery and the general public;
prepare clear and concise reports.
Education: Basic Education Requirement:
Graduation from high school or its equivalency.
Experience: Applicants must have had progressively responsible experience of the kind, quality and quantity described in the statements below, or any equivalent combination of training and experience:
Three (3) years of experience at a journeyman level or the equivalent in high pressure boiler or pressure vessel construction or repair; or as an operating engineer in charge of high pressure boiler operation; or as an inspector of high pressure boilers or pressure vessels.
