• Serves as the lead marketing and publicity strategist for assigned publishing lists, priority titles, and major organizational initiatives.
• Develops and implements comprehensive marketing and publicity plans that integrate media relations, author promotion, events, conferences, partnerships, advertising, and other digital channels.
• Coordinates review submissions, awards, and media outreach efforts.
• Plans and supports author events, book signings, and conferences, both virtual and in person.
• Manages conference exhibits, including budgets, logistics, materials, and on-site representation.
• Creates promotional materials, both print and digital, aligned with marketing campaigns.
• Maintains and updates title metadata in internal systems and distribution platforms.
• Collaborates with internal teams to ensure consistent messaging and campaign execution.
• Provides functional leadership, training, mentorship, and work review for marketing staff, student assistants, interns, and project personnel involved in assigned initiatives.
• Leads special projects and develops improved departmental procedures, standards, templates, and best practices.
• Other duties as assigned.
Minimum QualificationsEducation and Professional Work Experience
• Possession of a baccalaureate degree in marketing, public relations, or publishing or related field and 3 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for marketing, public relations, or publishing; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
Knowledge,
Skills and Abilities
• Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the area of marketing, public relations, or publishing as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
• Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems associated with marketing, public relations, or publishing.
• Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
• Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
• Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing, office, and marketing software.
• If applicable, for supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
SupplementalMinimum Qualifications
• Considerable knowledge of marketing, publicity, and event coordination practices.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines.
Desirable Qualifications• Experience working in a university press or academic publishing environment.
• Familiarity with University of Hawai`i Press titles and subject areas such as Asia, Hawai`i, the Pacific, and Asian American studies.
• Working knowledge of University of Hawai`i policies and procedures.
• Familiarity with applicable federal and state regulations related to publishing and promotional activity.
• Experience using Biblio, Naviga, or a similar relational database, and working knowledge of HTML and ONIX for managing publishing metadata.
• Proficiency with graphic design software such as Canva, Adobe InDesign, or equivalent tools.
