To strengthen workforce development opportunities in Hawaii by building sustainable internship systems that support both interns and supervisors/mentors, enhance professional development, and increase organizational capacity to prepare individuals for long-term career success. The candidate will work with government agencies, academic institutions, community-based organizations, and non-profit partners.
Member DutiesThe VISTA will strengthen HIPHI's capacity to deliver workforce development pathways for low-income and economically disadvantaged individuals, particularly students from communities underrepresented in public health careers. These individuals often face significant barriers to professional entry: lack of access to unpaid or low-paid internships, limited professional networks, inconsistent mentorship, and few structured pipelines into health-sector careers. Without institutional support, promising candidates are frequently screened out not by ability but by economic circumstance.
To close this gap, the member will build internship infrastructure: onboarding toolkits, role descriptions, and supervision guides. They will create evaluation systems, including feedback tools and outcome tracking, to ensure programs demonstrably serve disadvantaged participants. Lastly, they will develop supervisor and training materials, building staff capacity to consistently support interns.
