Recreation Assistant; Sailing Instructor - Rainbow Bay Marina

Summary

This position is assigned to the Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) Community Programs (N922) Branch, Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) Recreational Fleet and Family Readiness Support Services (N94), Commander, Navy Region Hawaii, at Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam (JBPHH), Honolulu, HI. The purpose of this position is to perform a variety of duties in support of the MWR recreation program. The incumbent provides instruction on boating safety, sailing, and windsurfing.

• Prepares lesson plans associated with sailing instruction for beginners, intermediate, and advanced students.
• Teaches private one‑on‑one and group lessons with no more than 12 students per class.
• Teaches basic sailing skills, rules of the road, care and maintenance of sails, lines, safety equipment, and defines storm signals, navigational aids, and buoys.

• Works under the general supervision of the Outdoor Recreation Manager.
• Works independently with minimal supervision under the confines of departmental and organizational guidelines, plans, and policies.
• Refers questionable or unusual problems to Management.

Incumbent complies with prescribed procedures and follows oral and written instructions. Incumbent is able to keep up with the normal flow of work. All duties are accomplished in a thorough, accurate, and timely manner.

Incumbent is expected to learn, apply, and comply with procedures applicable to the day‑to‑day operations of the Outdoor Recreation Program. Incumbent is to put forth extra effort during busy periods. Incumbent must know the rules of the Harbor and provide accurate information to customers/students.

Provide accurate sailing/windsurfing instructions through individual and group lessons, teaching individuals to respect and follow safety procedures at all times while in the water.

Incumbent will have one‑on‑one contact with customers/students in a safe and professional outdoor setting.

Incumbent will provide guidance and proper procedures to customers/students teaching sailing and windsurfing.

Long periods of sitting and standing may be required. Pushing, pulling, and manual labor required.

• Must pass all applicable records and background check.
• Must successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check. Any discrepancies must be resolved as a condition of employment.
• Must demonstrate proficiency in sailing and windsurfing.
• Must have knowledge of navigational aids, water safety, lifesaving, and first aid principles and practices.
• Must be able to work nights, weekends, and holidays.

This position does not have a positive education requirement.

Salary is dependent on experience and/or education.
