Regular, Full-Time, RCUH Non-Civil Service position with the Pacific Biosciences Research Center (PBRC), Pacific Cooperative Studies Unit (PCSU), located at Makiki Nursery, Division of Forestry and Wildlife Baseyard in Honolulu, Hawai‘i. Continuation of employment is dependent upon program/operational needs, satisfactory work performance, availability of funds, and compliance with applicable Federal/State laws.
MONTHLY SALARY: $4,071/Mon.
DUTIES
:
Applies horticultural methods for propagating, cultivating and maintaining seedlings of native Hawaiian plants. Assists with weeding, mixing media, plant propagation, pest control, maintenance of irrigation systems and timers and sanitation of growing containers. Assists with seed collection, seed storage plant material collection, plant propagation, weeding, out planting, pest control and watering. Inspects plants in Makiki nursery and other nurseries prior to out planting to minimize the ingress of pests and pathogens into the natural communities.
Aids in the research of the propagation of Hawaiian plants and native ecosystem restoration. Serves as custodian for all equipment, tools, and supplies required for nursery operation. Drives to collect seeds from forest reserves.
QUALIFICATIONS:

:
Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Horticulture, Botany, or related field. - EXPERIENCE
:
One to three (1-3) years of nursery or greenhouse experience. (Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university in Horticulture, Botany, or related field, may substitute for one (1) year of experience). - KNOWLEDGE
:
Basic knowledge of horticultural practices including seed storage, plant propagation, transplanting, growing media and fertilizers, pest management including insects, pathogens and weed control/removal. Knowledgeable of Hawai‘i’s native plant species especially those species of concern in the Federal Endangered Species List. Must be familiar with and understand to comply with federal and state endangered species laws and be able to handle the plants maintained under the guidelines governed by these laws. - ABILITIES & SKILLS
:
Familiarity with working in a nursery and greenhouse setting and using IPM and basic pesticides, i.e. organic and conventional agricultural chemicals etc. Fundamental skills in irrigation repair and maintenance. Must possess a valid driver’s license (and if use of personal vehicle on the job is required, must also have valid personal driver’s insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i’s No-Fault Driver’s Insurance) and maintain throughout the duration of employment.
Post Offer/Employment Condition:
Must complete pesticide training immediately after hire or no later than employee’s initial exposure to hazardous chemicals. Must be able to complete the UH Information Security Awareness Training (ISAT) within two (2) weeks from date of hire, and re-certify every twelve (12) months. - PHYSICAL/MEDICAL DEMANDS

Must be able to perform nursery work, at times under severe environmental conditions that are often encountered in native Hawaiian ecosystems; ability to lift fifty (50) pounds unassisted. - POLICY/REGULATORY REQUIREMENT
