Funding: Start-up Funds

Other Conditions: Position is expected to begin approximately August 2026 or as mutually acceptable. Renewal of appointment is dependent on performance, program needs and/or availability of funds.

Duties and Responsibilities

Research will involve employing conservation biology, field ecology, molecular, and statistical techniques to study the ecology of imperiled insects in Hawaii. Observe and record data of all laboratory and experimental work, including computer input and analysis. Assist with laboratory maintenance and inventory and relevant IBC protocols. Conduct research with collection permits in compliance with DLNR-DOFAW and USFWS. Prepare field, population genetic/omic, and experimental data for presentation and assist in writing manuscripts for publications.

Exercise effective data management in line with UH policies and procedures. The successful candidate should have a strong interest in pursuing a research career in conservation biology.

Minimum Qualifications

B.S. equivalent degree in biology or ecology. Full time graduate student in the College of Natural Sciences Graduate Programs, UHM. Must have basic knowledge of bee biology, ecology,molecular biology, population genetics analysis, field work, and working with insects. Skills in applying basic laboratory techniques to answer research questions; ability to organize tasks and to work independently; ability to write scientific reports;

excellent oral and written communication skills.

Desirable Qualifications

Experience in conducting DNA extraction, PCR, electrophoresis, R statistical programming, and related research and in handling insects, including stinging insects like bees. M.S. preferred.
